What is the opportunity?

Join our Data Engineering team in this exciting time as we implement Bank of Ireland's new cloud based data lake, take advantage of AI opportunities and transition workloads to that new Enterprise Data Lake platform.

As Test Manager, you will be responsible for both the people and the technical leadership the team, leading and mentoring of Test engineers within the Data Engineering function. You will have solid technical background in Test Engineering with experience in automation, tooling and other key capabilities.

We work in a very collaborative environment with a learning culture and you will use your experience to help guide future development across the team, the tools we use, help drive automation and introduce new and exciting test engineering patterns and frameworks.

In this Role, you will
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance to other Test engineers
  • Collaborate with programme and value stream stakeholders to assess and provide data test services
  • Work with Value Streams and Programmes to provide a Data Test Service to enable high quality and cost effective test solutions
  • Manage the resourcing and day to day oversight activities for the Data Test Engineering function with Data Engineering
  • Make decisions on engineering frameworks, tooling and patterns
  • Advocate and drive Automation and the adoption of processes such as TDD
  • Solve complex technical problems and provide creative solutions from your experience or through a rational problem solving process.
  • Ensure teams are following engineering best practices, our engineering standards and process's while driving improvements in parallel
  • Ensure the quality of the Data ware house and Data lake engineering solutions are delivered into operational support with high quality, and they meet business requirements

You have a proven track record (7+ years) as Test Manager in the Data Lake or Data Warehouse domain. You have deep technical knowledge of Data Lake, Cloud Technologies and Architecture, preferably AWS. You would also have experience working with Teradata, Snowflake, Redshift or Synapse.

Further technical knowledge and/or experience in the below are necessary to apply:

  • Testing complex data Pipelines and data flows
  • Agile Testing practices and guidelines, including Defect Management
  • Proficiency in SQL, Python, Pyspark
  • Ability to define and recommend right sized Test data and automate test data creation/refresh
  • Promotion of test data literacy and support evangelise test data reuse
  • Test automation experience using tools and frameworks ( e.g Selenium, Junit etc)
  • Various database technologies (Teradata, Oracle Big data/Hadoop)
  • Testing event driven systems with tools like Kafka, NiFi, Flink, Spark Streaming
  • Familiarity with AI concepts and willingness to explore LLM's, Generative AI and Machine Learning
  • Defect management and reporting
  • Scrum/Kanban, CI/CD, DevOps, SAFe delivery methodologies

Experience with any of the following will help you to stand out but is not necessary in order to apply for this role;

  • REST APIs
  • Cloudera Data Platform and appropriate Cloudera certifications
  • Demonstrable ability to derive and share Data-Driven insights with Business and Technical teams
  • Demonstrated ability of identifying and introducing process optimisations

Our growing and exciting Data Engineering team provides the engineering services for the Group's Enterprise Data Warehouse and Enterprise Data Lake. We sit within the Group Data & Analytics Office which is the core team for all things data in the bank.

We deliver the data elements to support Digital, Customer, Regulatory and other change initiatives that drive the Group's transformation agenda.
