As a member of the Nurse Management team, the post of CNM II has a pivotal role in the coordination, development, and management of activity and resources within the clinical area. The main responsibilities are: Management of Patient Care, Resource Management, Staffing Management, Staff and Service Development, facilitating communication, and professional/clinical leadership.

Overview of DepartmentThe Nursing Department in the South Infirmary-Victoria University Hospital is a dynamic and progressive Department consisting of nursing Staff and healthcare assistants. The Department is led by Dr. Ruth Lernihan, Director of Nursing. Dr. Lernihan is supported by a management team of Assistant Directors of Nursing, ward/unit based Clinical Nurse Managers, and Clinical Nurse Specialists. The nursing department plays a central role and is an active member of the organisational team in the development, management, and effective delivery of care and services.
Quality of CareThe provision of a high quality of care is facilitated through the ongoing education of the Nursing Staff which is motivated by patients needs. We place a strong focus on and support the professional and personal development of Nurses and healthcare assistants working within the Department.
EducationThe South Infirmary-Victoria University Hospital has a long association with Nurse training and education. The South Infirmary-Victoria University Hospital is an independent clinical site for University College Cork (UCC) undergraduate Nursing student clinical placements.
Practice DevelopmentThe Hospital is committed to and fosters a culture of practice development. Through practice development initiatives, training, and education, we endeavour to promote and facilitate the continuing professional and personal development of nursing staff in order to enable them to provide a high standard of evidenced based care for patients and their families.
