Sr. Electrical Engineer

Amazon Web Services is seeking Senior Electrical Engineers to become part of a global engineering team, responsible for the implementation and technical evaluation of our designs and the continuous innovation of our rapidly expanding data center footprint.
Engineers at Amazon work to design resilient, cost-effective electrical distribution systems. They are responsible for achieving a world-class uptime for our customers, justifying and communicating the technical decisions we make to Sr. Management, and driving continuous advancements and improvements with our designs. They have hands-on electrical design and field experience, can design and operate electrical systems, and understand the critical equipment needs for a data center. Teamwork is essential at Amazon, and you will work with internal and external groups, including utilities, manufacturers, vendors, and contractors.
As an Engineer in this role, you will work with the Principals and Senior Electrical Engineers to drive the standardization of designs across the global region in production data centers and resolve open technical issues in the electrical space. You will participate in the research and development of new technologies and designs applicable to our products or services. You will write technical documentation for such projects and may travel internationally, with some travel necessary and limited to no more than 30%.
Key job responsibilities
- Produce clear and concise documentation such as detailed design specifications, drawings, white papers, wiring schematics and diagrams, and reports.
- Understand and safeguard implementation of the Global Electrical Basis of Design (BoD) by driving standardization in the data center electrical designs.
- Develop strategic solutions that meet or exceed quality requirements and fall within budgetary constraints.
- Define project scope and provide technical support for information requests during innovation and research and development projects.
- Work with regional vendors and manufacturers to specify the appropriate electrical equipment.
- Work on concurrent projects in multiple geographical regions.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and cumulative 5+ years of experience with industrial or commercial electrical design.
- Excellent understanding of applicable regional electrical code (NEC, CEC, ETCI, NFC, etc.).
- In-depth understanding of critical data center electrical equipment and good working knowledge of BIM and Revit.
- Ability to research new designs, technologies, and construction methods of data center equipment and facilities.
- Ability to carry new design concepts through exploration, development, and into deployment/construction.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 3+ years of experience directly related to data center or mission-critical facility design and Professional Engineer, Chartered Engineer, or regional equivalent.
- Detailed understanding of uninterruptible power sources, diesel generators, electrical switchgear, power distribution units, variable frequency drives, and automatic/static transfer switches; familiarity with medium voltage distribution systems design.
- Direct experience with the construction, operation, or maintenance of data centers and basic understanding of mechanical equipment and system design.
- Knowledge of building codes and regulations including Life Safety, IBC, NFPA, NEC, and OSHA.
- Possess leadership, problem-solving skills, excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and maintain high-quality standards.
