Senior Station Technician
Salary: Grade E / €47,104 to €55,416 (dependent on qualifications and experience)
Contract type: Permanent
Hours: Full Time
Additional information: 37 hours per week
Location: Co Wexford, Ireland
Closing Date: 12-01-2025

The Organisation

Our client's purpose is simple, to save lives at sea. Their crews risk their lives to save those who are in danger of drowning. There is an opportunity for an engineering professional to join the team as the Senior Station Technician. This role would suit someone with broad mechanical expertise, ensuring the boat remains in perfect operational order. Additionally, strong leadership, resilience, and management skills are essential for navigating challenges, identifying and resolving defects, and effectively implementing maintenance plans.

Your role

The role of Senior Station Technician is focused for those individuals with a Republic of Ireland (ROI) NFQ Level 6 or higher in an engineering discipline, or time served engineering apprenticeship, or a sound mechanical, electrical, or electronic engineering background with extensive demonstrable experience.

If these qualifications or experience are not held then suitable individuals may be offered a Station Technician role in lieu in Grade D, and targeted training will be provided to reach the required standard.

In either role, most of your time will be spent ensuring that the boat is kept in the best possible condition. You will also ensure that the station functions on a day-to-day basis. You will be involved in the technical training of volunteer crew members so that when an emergency shout does occur, you, your crew, and your boat will be absolutely prepared.

Your role will include:

  1. Implementing the planned and preventative maintenance schedule.
  2. Fault finding, diagnostics, and defects reporting. Developing solutions to ensure the boat is always ready for operation.
  3. Working with the Area Technical Manager, the Senior Regional Technician, and the Regional Technical Cell to ensure smooth operations by resolving problems effectively and efficiently as they arise.
  4. Inspiring and motivating the volunteer technical crew; supporting their development, conducting shore-based training, identifying ways they can improve, and imparting your valuable knowledge.
  5. Taking a lead on Quality, Safety, Health, and Environmental issues, helping to develop a positive culture within the station.
  6. Spending time in the day-to-day running of the station; this may be in the form of answering e-mails, ensuring records are maintained, and working with the Operations Team.

This is an emergency response role so the successful candidates would need to live within a reasonable distance from the station and be prepared to respond to a pager 24/7 whilst on duty.

Some of the benefits

  1. Salary: €47,104 to €55,416 (dependent on experience)
  2. 26 days' annual leave (plus Bank Holiday days)
  3. Outstanding pension scheme (contributions of up to 16% of basic salary)
  4. Life Insurance
  5. Health plan option

About you

You will be someone who already holds, or is willing and able to work towards, the required qualifications and competencies for this role. If you don't have everything mentioned in the job spec above, please still apply; our client is keen to hear how your previous experience could fit with this role. Attitude and willingness to progress and learn are most important.

You will have the ability to build effective relationships with volunteers at the station, the supporters locally, and staff beyond, while acting as an ambassador for the station and the organisation within the community.

You will be personally motivated, prepared to work independently, and as part of a team. You are keen to solve problems, drive your own development, and support others in their development. You will have high quality communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to build open and inclusive relationships. You will take pride in your work, and be willing to ask for, and receive feedback.

To be considered for the role of Senior Station Technician, you will need:

  1. Knowledge and experience of the operation, maintenance, and repair of marine diesel engines. An engineering background and mindset is essential.
  2. To demonstrate leadership and management qualities, and the ability to motivate and maximise people's potential.
  3. The potential to be a passed-out as an Afloat Mechanic.
  4. Experience of fulfilling a boat mechanic role or equivalent experience in other equivalent disciplines, with the capacity and willingness to develop skills in other areas of seagoing duties.

So, if you are ready for your next exciting challenge as our client's new Senior Station Technician, and if you consider yourself an engineering leader, who can inspire and motivate a team of dedicated volunteers, then apply via the button shown.

This post requires a valid driving licence.

As this is a sea-going appointment, you will need to satisfy the Institution's medical and eyesight standards.

Safeguarding

Our client is committed to safeguarding; protecting a person's health, wellbeing, and human rights, enabling them to live free from harm, abuse, and neglect. They expect all employees and volunteers to share this commitment and have a zero-tolerance approach. The suitability of all prospective employees and volunteers will be assessed during the recruitment process in line with this commitment. This will include relevant criminal record checks being carried out dependent on the eligibility of the role.

Diversity

Our client's staff and volunteers save lives at sea without prejudice. They respect and value diversity of background, skills and perspectives within their teams, and consider it essential to help them deliver a world-class lifesaving service. They are an inclusive organisation and welcome applications from everyone. In addition to having the skills needed for the role, they also look for applicants who share their commitment to living their values (trustworthy, courageous, selfless, and dependable), and helping them work towards their Vision: To save Every One.
