Job Overview:

  • As a Senior Medical Scientist in Microbiology, you will lead the service delivery and ongoing development of the hospital's accredited Microbiology laboratory.
  • You will play a key role in ensuring the highest standards of diagnostic accuracy, efficiency, and patient care. This hospital fosters a warm and collaborative culture where your contributions will be highly valued.
  • You will contribute to the provision of an efficient, effective, cost-effective and quality Laboratory service to serve the needs of users and patients of the hospital.
  • You will work collaboratively with the laboratory, haemovigilance and hospital teams to ensure the fitness-for-purpose of the end-to-end blood transfusion service.
  • You will communicate regularly with the team, line manager and lead Consultant, keeping them informed of developments, challenges and highlighting opportunities for improvements.
  • You will be responsible for ensuring that the Microbiology service is delivered to agreed standards and compliant with statutory, accreditation and organisational requirements.

The candidate:

We are seeking a highly competent and adaptable Senior Medical Scientist with extensive experience in Microbiology.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in Microbiology in a hospital laboratory, with proven experience in problem-solving and staff supervision.

You will bring excellent technical knowledge, outstanding communication skills, and the ability to thrive under pressure.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • CORU-registered (or evidence of application in progress) Medical Scientist and eligible for Fellowship of the Academy of Clinical Science and Laboratory Medicine.
  • Masters degree or Masters degree-level qualification or equivalent in a relevant subject.
  • At least four years' experience in Microbiology since qualification.
  • Experience in service development and ISO15189 accreditation.
  • The ability and commitment to lead and develop a multi-disciplinary team using behaviours consistent with the organisation's values.
  • An organised, methodical and structured approach to work and excellent attention to detail.
  • Initiative, flexibility and problem-solving skills.
  • Flexible, innovative, and committed to achieving team and organizational goals.
  • Strong focus on patient care, quality, and laboratory excellence.
  • Experience with risk management and quality assurance.
  • Experience with JCI hospital accreditation (desirable).
