IMRO administers the performing right in copyright music on behalf of its members (songwriters, composers and music publishers) and on behalf of members of the international overseas societies that are affiliated to it. IMRO's function is to collect and distribute royalties arising from the public performance of copyright works.

Purpose of job

The role of the Legal Team in the company is to contribute to maximising both IMRO and PPI public performance cash collections, whether by enforcing existing licence agreements or by opposing unlicensed use of copyright music or copyright sound recordings. The Legal Executive contributes to the overall operation of the Legal Team by assisting in the processing of the legal files and supporting the Team in administering projects aimed at growing its contribution to the company. The position is part of the Legal Department of IMRO and reports to the In-House Solicitor.

Job context and principal accountabilities

The Legal Executive reports to and is under the day-to-day supervision of the In-House Solicitor. Working closely with the In-House Solicitor and the Legal Team, the Legal Executive will be assigned to a considerable number of litigation files, requiring preparation, drafting, issuing, serving and progressing debt collection and copyright infringement proceedings, including execution of any judgments obtained, on behalf of IMRO itself and in its capacity as collections agent of PPI.

1. Assisting and supporting in the collection of IMRO and PPI royalties.
2. Effective and efficient progression of debt collection and infringement files, including the drafting, issuing and serving of pleadings, communicating with defendants or their legal representatives, and applying for and enforcing judgments.
3. Liaising with colleagues in other teams within the company as required to address queries.
4. Undertaking such other duties as may be assigned by management from time to time.
5. Negotiating payment arrangements within general payment principles set by the company.
6. Liaising with PPI, for whom IMRO acts as collections agent, where necessary.

Working Contacts

1. Existing Licensees: On a daily basis for resolution of queries regarding legal proceedings and clarification of legal obligations under their respective licences.
2. In-House Solicitor: On a daily basis for assigning of tasks, oversight of legal files, resolution of queries, etc.
3. Licensing Team: On a daily basis to address queries regarding music usage in various premises.
4. Credit Control Team: On a daily basis regarding cases passing to Legal Team where Credit Control Team has been unable to obtain payment for outstanding debts.
5. Courts Service: On a daily basis for filing and issuing Court pleadings and applying for judgments.
6. Phonographic Performance Ireland (PPI): On a daily basis where required (e.g., passing certain collections to PPI or addressing queries raised by, or asked of, PPI).

Knowledge and experience

1. A strong background in general litigation is required and the ability to progress a significant litigation case-load is essential.
2. A background in managing litigation files concerning debt collection and/or copyright infringement is desirable, but not required.
3. Must be computer-literate, able to proficiently and competently use all MS Office applications.
4. Good communication and interpersonal skills are also crucial attributes for this position.
5. The successful applicant needs to be comfortable dealing with persons subject to court proceedings by telephone, email, and letter to address queries and negotiate payment arrangements.
6. A high degree of self-motivation and initiative is required for this position. The caseload being carried and related deadlines will dictate priorities. Difficult issues are referred to the In-House Solicitor or the Chief Operating Officer.
7. Being organised from the outset of a legal file is a key determinant of success in this position. The Legal Executive is responsible for the planning and organisation of their day-to-day work under the supervision of the In-House Solicitor.
