Dublin, Dublin City, Ireland EirGrid Group Full time
Head of Future Operations Design Authority (E2025100)

We are the people behind Ireland's electricity grid. We operate the power system with world-leading levels of variable asynchronous renewable generation, ensuring that everyone has power when they need it. But that's not all, we are now transforming the power system for future generations.

And that's just the beginning of our story. We have a critical purpose. That purpose is to transform the power system to enable our society to reduce our carbon emissions and meet our climate change and net zero ambitions.

Be part of the transformation

The Opportunity
We are now seeking a Head of Future Operations Design Authority to join the Chief Transformation & Technology Office.

The successful candidate will report directly to the Director of Innovation & Planning and be a member of EirGrid's extended leadership team.

As Head of Future Operations Design Authority, you will play a key role in transforming operation of the power system to be capable of delivering the net zero carbon ambition, which capitalises on Ireland's natural resources while facilitating and supporting Ireland's competitiveness in a sustainable manner.

You will lead the programme to put in place what is needed to operate the power system in 2030 and beyond and be responsible for developing the scenarios, options and optimum pathways to ensure that the operational ambition for the power system is realised. The work of Future Operations Design Authority is wide-ranging, covering the design and development of the operational systems, tools, system services, standards and operational policies required to operate the power system of the future.

We will look to you to lead strategic, change-related projects relating to the development and integration of new technologies and innovations (e.g. Hybrid connections, Battery Energy Storage Systems, Low Carbon Inertia Services) on the power system to enable them to operate efficiently and effectively. This will involve a high level of collaboration with, and buy-in from, the Operations & Asset Management Office to ensure the programme of changes is operationalised in a structured manner.

As part of your role, you will lead and motivate a high performing team of technical experts and thought leaders to deliver on strategic objectives and ensure an engaged and motivated workforce on an enduring basis.

You will have a deep understanding of system operational challenges and the role of system services in supporting a high level of renewables on the power system, thus ensuring resilience is not compromised in any way.

The Team
Chief Transformation and Technology Office (CTTO) is to vision, lead, transform, digitise, deliver and support the transformational programme to deliver the power system and market to 2030 and beyond, maximising the integration of renewables in a sustainable way at an affordable cost taking on board the voices of all aspects of our society. With an ultimate target of having a decarbonised power system in advance of 2050.

About you
Successful candidates will have:

  1. Experienced engineering leader in the utility or energy sector with a deep understanding of the sector and the potential operational change disruptors;
  2. Deep knowledge of power system and market operations, and the impact that the integration of renewable generation and new technologies will have on same;
  3. Demonstrated capability to promote a culture of delivery, innovation and learning;
  4. Ability to develop and implement innovative solutions in realistic timeframes;
  5. Experience of creating, leading and influencing high performing teams in changing circumstances;
  6. Deep understanding of the role and value of technology in delivering transformative change;
