Contract type: Part-time, fixed term. Maximum 3 years

Hours per week:Two sessions / one day per week

About the Irish College of GPs

The Irish College of GPs (referred to as the College) is the postgraduate training body (PGTB) responsible for postgraduate education, training and research in the specialty of General Practice.

The College has a national advisory role in relation to medical standards and engages with the Medical Council, Department of Health and Children, the Health Service Executive and the Health Information & Quality Authority among others. As a membership organisation, the College is responsible for providing and supporting the continuous professional development for general practitioners, numbering over 4,000. It is the PGTB accredited by the Medical Council to provide professional training for doctors wishing to enter the specialty of general practice.

Job Purpose

The goal of the College's Sustainability and Planetary Health Programme is to raise awareness among GPs of the need to consider the environment and the future sustainability of healthcare delivery to patients today. And to motivate GPs to implement more sustainable healthcare easily and safely.

This role requires the post holder to proactively foster engagement with key stakeholders and partnerships to enhance relevant education, awareness and participation of College members in the national implementation of more sustainable healthcare within quality improvement.

Additionally, the job holder will be required to regularly brief and be guided by an Advisory Group on sustainability and planetary health headed up by the Director of Quality Improvement.

In summary, this unique new role is responsible for leading, developing and implementing the College's strategy in Sustainability and Planetary Health. The requirements of the role are that the successful job holder will demonstrate their passion for sustainability and planetary health and be motivated to drive noticeable change.

Key Result Areas (KRA's)

  1. Research: Collate research and information from national and international sources and disseminate it by translating it into summary documents and e-resources relevant to Irish general practice.
  2. Communications: Develop pathways for queries and feedback from interested general practitioners, trainees and practice staff; and explore solutions by communicating within the Irish College of General Practitioners, including with the Colleges Advisory Group on Sustainability and Planetary Health, led by the Director of Quality Improvement (College employee). The Advisory Group includes the authors of the College GLAS TOOLKIT and other College departments as needed, research, education, GP training APD and PD, CME tutors. 
  3. Advocacy: Develop practical tools that assist in minimizing the environmental impact of clinical interventions and improve efficiencies of the business of running a practice. Work with other (external such as the HSE) organisations to support GPs to drive the changes that are necessary in practice.
  4. Project delivery: Seek funding and other resources from external sources for current and future projects which focus on supporting practices for improving delivery of patient care.
  5. Leadership: Advocacy, role modelling in primary care through GP-led initiatives, innovations and dissemination of good, green, clinical, community practice.
  6. Clinical Care: Participate in education and training to support what GPs can do in normal practice. Topics may include greener prescribing, deprescribing, social prescribing, lifestyle behaviour modification, active travel, , plant-based nutrition, breast-feeding, reducing unnecessary clinical actions such as tests and referrals, patient education and patient participation.
  7.  A greener practice workplace: To create awareness that the GP practice has a carbon footprint: lighting, water supply, water use, heating and cooling, energy use and source, sterilizing and disinfection, infection control, plastic use and recycling, single use devices, waste segregation, transport of patients and staff.
  8. Stakeholder engagement: Proactively engage in relevant Medical Education, Publications, Research, Social Media promotions and Policy Development. Engage with WONCA Europe and WONCA World initiatives on sustainable healthcare

Person specification

The ideal candidate will have the following knowledge, skills, expertise and competencies:

Qualifications & experience

  • Be a medically qualified health professional, holding the MICGP qualification and be a current College member in good standing for the duration of the post.
  • Be enrolled on and compliance with the Professional Competence Scheme
  • Concurrently hold a part-time clinical appointment equivalent to a minimum of four sessions of clinical general practice per week
  • Be registered with the Medical Council of Ireland on the Specialist Division for general practice.
  • Demonstrate a track record of managing and implementing projects in sustainability and planetary health.

Essential 

  • Min of 3 - 5 years of postgraduate medical experience in general practice.
  • Demonstrated successful and innovative leadership and management in sustainability and planetary health and primary care, preferably reflected by publication of peer reviewed research in relevant areas of care. 
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and develop collaborative working relationships with other organisations. Some involvement in delivery / design of healthcare/GP education would also be an advantage.
  • Be able to provide evidence of passion for implementing Sustainability and Planetary Health initiatives in a GP environment.
  • Proven team worker.
  • Proven abilities to deliver projects within tight times frames.

Behavioral competencies

  • Be a self-starter with high motivation and the ability to work flexibly on own initiative.
  • Possess excellent writing, presentation and verbal communication skills.
  • At ease with presentations to a wide range of stakeholders both remote and in person.
  • Flexible and adaptable - this role will require occasional travel around Ireland.
