While the principles of low energy building apply equally for new build and upgrades, the reality is that htting passive levels becomes much trickier when retrofitting.

The Passive House Institute have taken this on board and created a retrofit standard that is ambitious but achievable.

Job Description We have a position for someone with a broad interest in sustainability and a good technical background. The position requires flexible working on EU funded FP7 Research projects. The main project is about developing a bio-cementation process using waste to help reduce the environmental impact of the cement industry. The work could suit someone with an architectural, engineering or material science background. We are looking for the right person with an enthusiasm for research and the ability to learn so specific knowledge or experience is less important than your approach to the work and the issues.

We have other FP7 projects which the successful candidate with the right skills and interest could work on and we have recently submitted proposals for four more FP7 projects which, if they are succesfully funded, would start in 2013.

The position is for someone with, ideally, the following experience and knowledge:

• An ability to undertake detailed research and apply systems thinking to the subject area and to be able to communicate this understanding in words and diagrams. Material and energy flow analysis will be required as part of Life Cycle Assessments.
• An ability to write reports at the level of post graduate / academic research in excellent English.
• Experience in LCA ( Life Cycle Assessment ) methodology would be useful. 'SimaPro 5' software will be used in the project and training for this will be provided.
• An ability to develop business development strategies and plans for innovative, sustainable technologies.
• A working knowledge of the cement production process and the cement and concrete industry, or an interest in this area, would be ideal but is not essential.
• The ability to undertake administration tasks associated with the projects will be necessary to satisfy the EC project requirements

The main project started on 1 March 2012 and lasts 3 years. Flexible working is required to meet project milestones. This is not always a full time job but will require full time working for some of the time.

Our office is located in central Dublin in a pleasant shared working environment with a firm of architects.

The salary negotiable based on experience and restricted by the fixed EU project budget.
