Saint John of God Hospital, Stillorgan is an independent acute psychiatric with 180 inpatient beds and is one of the leading European providers in mental health services. The Hospital currently provides General Adult and specialist services in Substance Misuse, Psychotic Disorders, Eating Disorders, Psychiatry of Later Life and Adolescent Disorders. Outpatient services provide a range of services including psychiatry, psychology and access to Wellness and Recovery Action Plan services. The Hospital is affiliated with University College Dublin, Trinity College Dublin, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, Dublin City University and the University of Limerick for undergraduate and postgraduate healthcare professional programmes.

An extensive clinical research programme operates throughout the hospital's Mental Health Services. Saint John of God Hospital retains a leadership role in developing innovative and effective treatment programmes for people suffering from mental health problems. Referrals are accepted nationally and internationally. While providing excellent clinical treatment and care to patients and their families, we are committed to training healthcare professionals and to conducting clinical research designed to enhance treatment programmes to improve outcomes for patients and the overall enhancement of their quality of life.

Consultant Psychiatrist
(Permanent – Full time)

The post holder will be responsible for the provision of 20 acute inpatient beds and outpatient consultant adult and later life services. The Post holder will provide clinical leadership to the Team 5 Multidisciplinary team. The successful candidate for this post will play a pivotal role in the review and development of the Hospital's long-established adult and later life services and relevant programme (s) in ensuring that services are in keeping with best international practice, taking account of workload allied with the implementation of the Mental Health Act 2001.

This development is part of an emerging vision, which continues to see the growth in service provision, through the development of specialist and tertiary mental health treatment units and programmes.

The post holder will be responsible for the development of a comprehensive range of outpatient Adult and Later Life services at Saint John of God Hospital. It is expected that the appointee will develop programmes in areas including mood/anxiety disorders, psychoses and behavioural and psychological symptoms in dementia (BPSDs). The appointee will also be expected to assist in identification of any of the service's unmet needs in respect of the presenting patient population and suggest proposals as to how these service needs could be met.

The post holder will also have an inpatient and outpatient responsibility and will participate in the consultant out of hours on call rota.

The post holder will be expected to participate in the Clinical Governance structure at the Hospital. Noting that Saint John of God Hospital is a teaching hospital and an interest in teaching and research is essential in this role. This includes direct clinical supervision and line management of any trainees and any speciality doctors for whom he/she is the identified clinical supervisor e.g. senior registrar, registrar and medical student team members.

Essential Criteria:

Full registration in the General Register of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Medical Council in Ireland or entitlement to be so registered Possession of the MRCPsych or equivalent thereto; and Registration as a specialist in the Specialist Division of the Register of Medical Practitioners, maintained by the Medical Council of Ireland in the speciality of Adult and Psychiatry of Later Life. Seven years satisfactory postgraduate training and experience in the medical profession including five years in psychiatry of which three years were in adult and later life psychiatry. A satisfactory knowledge of the administration of psychiatric services. Possess a high standard of professional attainment and the requisite knowledge and ability for the proper discharge of the duties of the post.
