At Engineering & Property Services (E&PS) we take care of all J&J buildings around the world providing end to end services from Real Estate, Engineering & Strategic Project Delivery to Facilities Management. We have a profound influence on the entire J&J Enterprise, providing innovative workplaces where our employees can collaborate and grow, and delivering flexible site solutions which enable our business to best serve our important customers and patients.

The Senior Director, Engineering & Construction Safety Center of Excellence (COE) lead plays a crucial role in developing and implementing a global design & construction safety vision across Johnson & Johnson, reinforcing our dedication to outstanding safety standards. This leadership position is tasked with expanding detailed construction safety strategies and standards throughout the organization, ensuring a unified approach to safety excellence. The role involves enhancing the development of our safety practices, encouraging organizational adherence to global safety standards, and initiating the creation of a Safety Community of Practice (COP). An essential function of this role includes delivering regular and meaningful updates to the Leadership Team (LT), the E&PS Leadership, and Technical Operations & Risk (TO&R) leaders, promoting a clear and inclusive strategy for safety governance and ongoing enhancement throughout the project lifecycle-from the initial design to construction, qualification, commissioning, and operational transition.

This role will directly report to the Vice President of E&PS, Global Engineering and Strategic Project Delivery. This position will oversee at least three direct reports, with the opportunity to additionally define the organizational structure as needed. The initial direct reports comprise the Director for Construction Safety, the Senior Manager of Construction Safety for EMEA & APAC, and the Senior Manager of Construction Safety for the Americas.

This role is accountable for the overarching safety strategy for our contractors who build our facilities. The individual must promote a uniform and consistent approach across the organization to enhance the efficiency and impact of our construction safety programs throughout varied cultures and regions.

The ideal candidate will be proficient in leadership within the organization and in influencing, skilled at navigating teams through changes with a clear strategic direction. While a foundation in construction safety engineering and Environment, Health, Safety, & Sustainability (EH&S) is crucial, most important is the skill to guide, motivate, and weave safety and sustainability into Johnson & Johnson's ethos and daily operations. This leader will advocate for safety standards across a variety of projects, prioritizing excellence and adherence through guiding principles over just technical knowledge.

The individual will work closely with business partners to synchronize on the safety strategy. Essential connections include project teams, EH&S leaders, and executive groups in E&PS and Supply Chain. Furthermore, the individual will engage with local, national, and global regulatory bodies for construction-related safety and heads of professional safety and engineering societies, including engaging in industry discussions to consistently seek out new practices in safety excellence.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership and Transformational Impact
  • Act as a pivotal figure in formulating and implementing J&J's global construction safety strategy, ensuring it resonates with our fundamental mission and business aims.
  • Design and manage the deployment of forward-thinking safety plans that go beyond health & safety regulations, concentrating on risk reduction and injury prevention across all projects.
  • Guide by example, encouraging teamwork within the Construction Safety operations team and broader departments to introduce flexible safety strategies, improving the safety culture throughout J&J's operations.
  • Develop and implement high reliability, data driven/SIF risk based global technicalprograms (strategy and tactics) to ensure construction safety compliance with health & safety & environmental regulations and J&J standards, aiming to eliminate or control construction risks on project sites and prevent injuries.
Operational Excellence and Governance
  • Build a strong safety always culture strengthening visible leadership opportunities and capabilities in design and construction teams and drive a learning culture to prevent recurrence of SIF-P events.
  • Steers the design and use of construction safety digital platforms including integration of construction safety in digital project lifecycle (e.g. BIM).
  • Enhance and broaden One Construction Safety Standard (OneCSS), integrating advanced systems to consolidate and improve J&J's safety measures, thus reducing injuries and loss.
  • Integrate OneCSS within J&J's project management framework, leading proactive training and support to make safety a core aspect of all projects.
  • Create and apply clear standards and strong policies in collaboration with EH&S, promoting a proactive approach to safety management in all engineering projects.
  • Establish a closed loop process for risk evaluation, mitigation, and monitoring, ensuring thorough adherence to safety standards.
Influence and Collaboration
  • Develop the Construction Safety governance framework and direct the Construction Safety leadership rhythm, using data to inform decisions and foster ongoing safety advancements.
  • Initiate the Global Construction Safety Team, Stakeholder Forum, and Community of Practice to build a strong safety culture, uniting project and organizational leaders around shared safety objectives.
Innovation and Continuous Improvement
  • Connect with industry experts and participate in forums to keep J&J at the forefront of construction safety, boosting our standing and influence in the field.
  • Implement a metrics-based program to use analytics for identifying strategic enhancements, thereby elevating safety outcomes across J&J.
Talent Development and Safety Education
  • Embrace and promote the Johnson & Johnson Leadership Imperatives, cultivating a group of safety-aware leaders and specialists within the company.
  • Develop and roll out extensive training initiatives, in line with E&PS and EH&S goals, to bolster organizational safety skills.
