A Chief Technical Officer 1 is required within the School of Natural Sciences to manage activities across multiple disciplines. The School places a strong emphasis on research and teaching. The post holder will lead one of three teams of technical officers supporting a diverse range of operations across the School. At undergraduate level, technical support is required across several programmes including Biology and Biomedical Sciences, Geoscience, Geography and Environmental Sciences & Engineering. Technical support is also necessary for the School's taught MSc programmes, including current cross-disciplinary Masters programs in Biodiversity & Conservation, Environmental Sciences, Smart & Sustainable Cities, and Development Practise. These activities require support for an array of classrooms, laboratories and fieldwork, including equipment for sample preparation.

The CTO1 role requires an individual that is committed to overseeing day-to-day technical matters across the School while also furthering the School's longer-term objectives. The postholder is a key figure in ensuring that the School acts responsibly to embrace the complexities of modern research and the changing environment, and consistently works at the forefront of best practice. The ideal candidate will have highly developed administrative and communication skills, will be motivated and flexible in their approach to work and will be committed to supporting quality in higher education and research. Exceptional interpersonal skills including the ability to manage staff is essential. The successful candidate will display a can-do-attitude and a commitment to the school with the aim of contributing to its on-going development. Reporting to the Head of School, the role holder will work closely with the School Manager, School Directors, Heads of Discipline, Technical staff and all other staff.

Hours of Post: 36.5 Hours per week

Salary: This appointment will be made on the Chief Technical Officer 1 salary scale (€68,128 to €84,852 per annum) at a point in line with current Government pay policy. monthly/weekly payscales. (tcd.ie)

  • Applicants must have at least 3 years of experience in laboratory-based teaching and research support. Applicants should clearly address this experience and how they obtained their knowledge in their application.

  • Candidates should give an example of a technical support practice that they established and/or improved, the impact of that change and any lessons learned from the experience.
  • Please note that shortlisted applicants will be asked to prepare a presentation for interview stage outlining 'How you will lead a team of technical staff in the School of Natural Sciences into the future".
  • This should include reference to; A) Potential challenges and opportunities in a growing and diverse multi-disciplinary School and approaches to dealing with those.
    B) Potential solutions and/or actions to enhance efficiencies and service delivery.
