Mechanical Project Design Engineer

Main Function
The Project Design Engineer is responsible for converting client-issued layouts and specifications, in any format, into detailed 3D models and fabrication drawings.
The role covers all aspects of project design deliverables, from pre-order stage (where required) through to production handover, ensuring designs meet compliance, cost, and schedule targets
Core Responsibilities
Act as the primary technical contact for clients/contractors on assigned projects.
Create and maintain detailed SolidWorks/Revit models and technical drawings for ductwork, plenums, and related components.
Prepare material take-offs and part lists; coordinate with production and R&D teams to ensure manufacturability.
Integrate designs into federated BIM models (Navisworks) to detect and resolve clashes.
Collaborate with stakeholders to address coordination issues before fabrication.
Produce custom component and installation drawings (e.g. flashings, transitions, coving, Unistrut placement, logistics layouts).
Implement and maintain CAD automation (DriveWorks) to streamline repetitive design tasks.
Develop project area codes aligned with schedules to detail production elements (standard and non-standard).
Feed data into current Excel processes and support transition to future CAD-to-CAM workflows.
Manage project documentation and update deliverables in Procore.
Liaise with consultant engineers and QS to review scope and refine designs, in conjunction with the commercial team.
Coordinate with procurement, operations, fabrication, and other teams to resolve queries.
Provide clear guidance to fabrication teams during project handover, ensuring shop-floor staff have all necessary drawings and instructions.
Attend design review meetings and incorporate any required revisions.
Respond promptly to RFIs and technical queries.
Ensure all design outputs conform to quality standards and project specifications.
Essential Criteria
Honours degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
3+ years' experience in mechanical design or building services engineering.
Advanced user of SolidWorks; proficient in Revit and BIM coordination.
Experience with CAD automation tools (e.g. DriveWorks).
Excellent communication and organisational skills; proactive problem-solver.
Legally permitted to work in the EU; fluent English for business purposes.
Familiarity with ventilation/ducting standards (e.g. SMACNA, DW144).
Openness to adopting new ways of working, including future AI tools and approaches to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and innovation in daily design tasks.
