Postdoctoral Researcher in Precision Electrochemical Nanosensor Development for detection of saliva based biomarkers
Contract: Full Time/Fixed Term
As one of Europe's leading ICT institutes, with over 600 people and a capital infrastructure in excess of €250m, Tyndall is focusing its research on front-end precision electrochemical nanosensor development.
We recently secured funding for the project "CellSense: Bacterial-based Biosensor Digital Twin for Microbial Community Sensing".
In the 21st century, understanding microbial ecology and its impact on health and the environment is a major challenge.
Developing sensors to detect communication patterns within microbial communities can provide new insights into their behavior.
Within this SFI-funded project, applications are invited for a Post-Doctoral research position within the Nanotechnology Group at Tyndall National Institute – University College Cork.
The initial appointment is for 18 months, with potential for extension based on further funding.
Our team has developed integrated electrochemical nanosensors using nanowires, demonstrating enhanced sensitivity for molecules such as pesticides, ions, DNA, viruses, and glucose.
Our work on bi-potentiometric on-chip sensing has led to high-impact publications, with a significant portion in top-tier journals.
Purpose of the role
The successful candidate will co-develop electrochemical sensing approaches for detecting saliva biomarkers and contribute to the development and fabrication of novel on-chip nanoscale Boron Doped Diamond (BDD) electrodes.
Responsibilities include sensor development, chemical modification, testing, characterization, integration with electronics, and field deployment.
Flexibility in electrochemical approaches is essential.
The candidate will participate in collaborative projects, contribute to EU project proposals, and may lead technical and project management activities.
Supervision of students and contribution to research dissemination are also expected.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Manage laboratory activities and supervise junior staff
Develop research projects independently and in collaboration
Coordinate with EU partners on chemical sensor projects
Assist in grant proposal writing and funding acquisition
Participate in outreach and scholarly activities
Supervise postgraduate students and contribute to training
Ensure compliance with safety and quality policies
Essential criteria
PhD in Science, Engineering, or related field
Research experience in electrochemical sensors with publications in leading journals
Knowledge of sensor modification and development
Experience with field deployment and validation techniques
Excellent communication skills
Desirable criteria
Entrepreneurial experience and creativity
Experience in grant writing and industry collaboration
Self-motivated with initiative
Background in agriculture sector (desirable)
Salary: €45,847 - €52,339 per annum, depending on experience.
