Senior Postdoc, data-model comparison of past storminess - Maynooth, Ireland

This is a 16 month postdoctoral position working at the ICARUS Climate Research Institute at Maynooth University, which is also part of the geography department.
The closing date is March 30th 2025 and interviews will take place in April, with the position beginning as soon as possible thereafter.
The post will be supervised by Dr Lisa Orme (lisa.orme@mu.ie).

Salary:
- Senior Post Doctoral Researcher (2024): €52,716 p.a, for researchers with 2 years relevant postdoctoral experience.
- Post Doctoral Researcher (2024): €44,847 – €51,313 p.a. (6 points)

Description:
They are seeking a Post Doctoral Researcher (Level 2) to work on an Irish Research Council funded project (HoStIr: Holocene Storminess in Ireland). The response of atmospheric circulation to warming is one of the least certain aspects of climate science, due in part to a spread between model simulations of the storm track and uncertainty about the key drivers of change. The HoStIr project seeks to test new proxies for past sea spray deposition to coastal peatlands (Strand 1; S1) and then use these to develop multi-millennial records of past storminess for western Ireland (S2). Strand 3, led by the advertised postdoctoral researcher, will use the developed storminess records to conduct a data-model comparison of storminess in Ireland during the mid-Holocene and last millennium, using PMIP4-CMIP6 simulations.
Realisation of the project aims will allow evaluation of how well models capture changes in storminess and transform our understanding of how and why storminess is altered during warm intervals.
The successful candidate will work with Dr. Lisa Orme (P.I.) who is leading Strand 2.

Tasks:
The successful candidate will work to deepen our understanding of past (Holocene) storminess variability in Ireland through a data-model comparison. This research will extract information about storm tracks and storm intensity and frequency from existing PMIP4-CMIP6 simulations of the mid-Holocene and last millennium, to assess whether the simulations show different patterns of storminess in the past. Similar approaches have already been applied to simulations of recent and future climate (e.g. Catto et al., 2011; Priestley et al., 2020). This will allow a data-model comparison between the model evidence and palaeoclimate records of past storminess from Strand 2, as well as exploration of the impact of past changes in boundary conditions on storminess, using both the model simulations and existing palaeoclimate evidence. Training in the extraction of past storm tracks will be provided if required.

Requirements:
Essential:

• A PhD in geography, earth science, climate science or other related discipline.

• To be appointed at the grade of Senior Post Doctoral researcher, candidates will need at least two years post-doctoral relevant relative research experience.

• Excellent coding abilities in R (or a similar language).
Desirable:

• Experience of analysing the outputs of climate models and/or palaeoclimate data-model comparison.

• Knowledge of the climate system, atmospheric circulation and/or palaeoclimate research.

• Experience in delivering research projects to a high standard.

• A history of publication commensurate with career stage.

• Excellent oral, written, and analytical skills.

Applications:
Please contact Dr Lisa Orme (lisa.orme@mu.ie) with any questions about the position.
