Relief Theatre Staff Nurse - UPMC Sports Surgery Clinic, Dublin Location: Sports Surgery Clinic Job type: Casual/Bank Overview of role: We are looking to hire a Relief Staff Nurse in Theatre to work shifts based on department requirements on a casual basis Primary Duties and Responsibilities: The Staff Nurse reports to and is accountable to the Director of Nursing and Theatre Manager in all matters relating to the job. Outline of Duties and Responsibilities The Staff Nurse will be expected to take responsibility for a caseload of patients in which you will assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care. In addition, you are expected to practice within the Code of Practice, Rules and Guidelines set out by An Bord Altranais and comply with Policies and Procedures of the Sports Surgery Clinic. You will be held responsible to the Theatre Manager and in her absence to the delegated CNM holding shift responsibility for the theatre. At all times you will practice within the limits of your experience. The Theatre Nurse will be required to possess a clear understanding and commitment to the ethos and philosophy of the Sports Surgery Clinic. Duties and Responsibilities General Accountability To maintain throughout the Clinic an awareness of the primacy of patient in relation to all clinical activities and maintain a high standard of nursing care. To create and promote healthy working relationships. To demonstrate behaviour consistent with the values of the Clinic. To ensure that each patient is treated as an individual and that privacy and confidentiality are maintained at all times. To actively participate in the Clinic's Accreditation programme and the ethos of Continuous Quality Improvement. Keep CNMs and the Theatre Manager appraised of all issues as required. Professional Responsibilities: As a nurse practitioner you must practice within the Code of Practice, Rules and Guidelines set out by An Bord Altranais and comply with Policies and Procedures of the Sports Surgery Clinic. Ensure each patient is treated as an individual, and that his/her needs are attended to and their physical, psychological and religious well being is respected Give direct patient care in selected patient situations and serve as a behavioural model for excellence in practice Maintains the safety and well being of patients, their relatives, and staff in accordance with SSC policies and procedures. Set standards of Nursing these standards to the Nursing Personnel; audit and change standards as necessary Liaise effectively with all members of the multi-disciplinary team to ensure that care delivery is patient focused and of the highest standard Ensure that a professional standard of behaviour is maintained by all nursing team members. Facilitate effective communication with patients, relatives and multidisciplinary team as necessary. Adherence to departmental patient identification policy at all times. Ensures all equipment is cleaned, checked daily and maintained and takes appropriate action with faulty equipment as per SSC policy. Takes responsibility for ensuring safe lifting techniques when assisting in the movement and lifting of patients and equipment Anticipate and be aware of needs of the multidisciplinary team during operative process. Reports to the Theatre Manager and/or CNMs (Theatre), accidents, incidents, and complaints, drug defects affecting patients, staff, supplies and services. Communicate effectively at all times and maintain a harmonious working environment. Takes an active role in maintaining effective communication with all disciplines Assists in the care, labelling and dispatch of specimens for laboratory examination Assists in maintaining the accurate collection of data in relation to theatre in order that statistics may be accurately compiled Preserve the dignity and rights of the patients at all times during their stay in the operating department anaesthetised or conscious. Ensures all clinical and legal documents are completed and that they are accurate and legible in accordance with SSC guidelines Maintains appropriate pharmacy stock levels and adheres to SSC polices and procedures Ensure patient confidentiality is respected and maintained at all times. Ensure nursing care is based on the latest research findings and constitutes best practice. Ensures that safety procedures are carried out in relation to swabs, instruments and needle counts, and in relation to hazards such as fire and infection control. Demonstrate initiative and be receptive to new ideas and development. Qualifications & Experience: Qualifications, Experience & Competencies Be a Registered Nurse and eligible to register with An Bord Altranais on the General Division of the live register. A recognised Theatre or Anaesthetic Course is desirable but not essential. Have two years post registration theatre experience Experience: Candidates must ideally: Have worked as a Theatre, Anaesthetics, Scrub nurse in a hospital setting Have managed patient care ensuring the highest professional standards using an evidence based and care planning approach Be computer literate Have excellent interpersonal skills and proven written and verbal communication abilities. Have the ability to work on own initiative, prioritise and manage a number of issues simultaneously and demonstrate attention to detail Be able to identify potential difficulties and formulate solutions.
