Responsibilities include: Advise, encourage, support and facilitate nursing students learning through a broad range of means e.g.
the identification of learning opportunities in the clinical areas, imparting knowledge and creating an environment that is conducive to learning in order that students can achieve maximum outcome from clinical placements.
Help create a climate in which nursing students are valued and supported.
Assist nursing students to adapt to the clinical environment with orientation programmes and organised reflective practice.
Provide guidance to Students and Preceptors/ Registered Nurses on any issues relating to students clinical practice which arise in the clinical areas.
Respond to educational needs within the hospital in collaboration with Senior Nurse Management, Clinical Nurse Managers, and Nurse Practice Development Coordinator.
Assess, Plan, Organise, Supervise, Evaluate and Monitor quality nursing standards and foster advanced evidence based clinical practice in the clinical learning environment.
Monitor nursing students performance in the clinical setting and discuss the strengths and development needs with the student and the Preceptor/ Registered Nurse/CNM.
Advise CNM and Preceptor/Registered Nurse on the learning needs of individual students as required.
Work as a member of the Nurse Practice Development Team on quality initiatives.
Participate in the development, formulation and evaluation of guidelines, policies and procedures to enhance a quality service.
Act as a link between the nursing student, the preceptor, nurse manager and the School of Nursing and Midwifery, UCC.
Will attend (as allocated) Practice Placement Committee, Allocations Committee, Preceptorship Forum and any external collaborations as requested by our academic partner.
Maintain professional standards in relation to confidentiality, ethics and legislation.
Keep up to date with current research, ensure evidence-based practice and research is utilised and must contribute to nursing research that is relevant to his/her area of practice.
Observe, report and take appropriate action on any matter which may be harmful to staff and/or patients.
Assist in observing and ensuring implementation and adherence to established policies and procedures e.g.
health and safety, infection control, medication management, storage and use of controlled drugs etc.
Eligibility Criteria: Be registered on the General Division of the register of Nurses kept by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) or be entitled to be so registered.
Possess a 3rd Level qualification at level 8 (ordinary degree) or higher.
Have at least 5 years post registration experience of which 2 years must be in a student learning environment.
Have the clinical, management and administrative capacity to properly discharge the functions of the role.
Will demonstrate evidence of a commitment to personal professional development, training and nursing research.
Have excellent interpersonal and organisational skills, and be able to demonstrate a high standard of verbal and written communication skills.
Have completed a recognised Teaching and Assessing course/module as this is highly desirable.
