Job Description

This role involves overseeing strategic initiatives that are forward-looking, as well as current programs and activities that support business operations.

As a Project Portfolio Manager for Strategic Initiatives, you will be responsible for coordinating resources for projects and programs across all initiatives in the chosen functional area portfolio. You will serve as a key resource for the Strategic Initiatives team within the Global Entity Management & Oversight PMO, project/program steering committees, and will report to the Director of Risk & Platforms. Your main responsibility will be engaging with senior executives and reporting on the status and performance of initiatives in the selected functional area.

A successful portfolio manager will influence the prioritization of programs and projects, facilitating discussions with senior leadership to make the best use of available resources. This position carries the overall responsibility for assisting organizational leadership in managing programs and projects throughout the entire lifecycle of Strategic Initiatives, aiming to achieve enterprise goals and objectives effectively.

Key Duties / Responsibilities

  1. Regularly review the portfolio to ensure it aligns with strategic objectives.
  2. Ensure projects are adequately resourced to meet their goals.
  3. Facilitate discussions on prioritization and trade-offs with the business.
  4. Keep business-as-usual (BAU) projects separate from the portfolio.
  5. Identify synergies and opportunities within the portfolio and across projects, making recommendations for improvements to the business.
  6. Provide a comprehensive overview of portfolio progress, highlighting risks and issues that need resolution.
  7. Monitor the performance of each project and project manager, offering support and coaching as necessary to ensure success.
  8. Challenge the business constructively to ensure independent oversight and transparency regarding project progress, risks, issues, and obstacles.
  9. Collaborate with the PMO Director to facilitate strategic planning and prioritization processes, resulting in a portfolio that reflects our strategic goals and includes measurable outcomes.
  10. Manage the PMO's strategic financial investments to enhance value and impact.
  11. Ensure visibility into the portfolio's status, health, and risks at various organizational levels.
  12. Promote cross-functional governance processes to foster alignment and engagement between the PMO and business stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • Familiarity with project management processes, workflows, and terminology, including an understanding of the Project Management Institute (PMI) framework.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, achieve goals, and work effectively under pressure in a dynamic and complex environment.
  • Skill in breaking down large amounts of information into manageable parts for agile decision-making.
  • Capacity to influence outcomes and address conflicts effectively.
  • Experience managing large-scale, complex project initiatives and various project components simultaneously, with a keen attention to detail and accuracy, meeting deadlines despite competing priorities.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical/creative thinking skills.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and negotiation abilities, with a talent for building and maintaining relationships with colleagues and business partners.
  • Strong verbal, written, and presentation skills, with experience presenting to senior leadership.
  • Proven ability to thrive in ambiguous situations and adapt from the current state to proposed solutions.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office; knowledge of Clarizen is a plus.
  • A minimum of 6 years of experience in large-scale project and program management.
  • A bachelor's degree is required.
  • PMP certification (including PGMP or PMI-RMP) is preferred but not mandatory.
