Job Overview

Composers create musical scores for TV, film, and computer games. They use live musicians and sampling to evoke the intended mood or emotion to mirror what's happening onscreen. Composers write original music for the concert stage, recordings, or films and other visual media.

Responsibilities
  • Write original music for various media including film, TV, and video games.
  • Collaborate with directors and producers to align music with visual content.
  • Utilize software such as Logic Pro X for writing and producing music.
  • Work on commissions and freelance projects.
  • Adapt compositions based on feedback and project requirements.
Experience & Skills

Get as much experience from any aspect of music you can. The better musician you become, the better composer you will be. Practice composing for ensembles as well as for film/TV/video games. Keeping up-to-date on recording, editing, and sampling software is also important.

  • Detail-oriented and adaptable.
  • Strong work ethic and quick writing skills.
  • Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with directors and producers.
Education & Training

Schooling is essential to becoming a composer. Aspiring composers need to understand the mechanics of music and be able to put together 20-30 minutes of music quickly. Many successful composers have degrees in music composition or related fields.

Salary

On average, composers earn approximately $53,300 per year. The salary range for composers runs from $20,000 to $115,000.
