Senior Automation Engineer

GxP Recruitment is delighted to support a leading pharmaceutical manufacturing site in Cavan in their search for a Senior Automation Engineer. This is a key leadership role, responsible for shaping and executing the site's automation and Operational Technology (OT) strategy in alignment with wider business and engineering objectives.

As part of the site's Engineering leadership team, you will collaborate across departments, including IT, vendors, sister sites, and internal automation SMEs, to deliver best-in-class automation solutions. The successful candidate will possess strong technical acumen, excellent stakeholder management skills, and a track record of driving technology-based improvements in a regulated manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of the site's OT strategy and roadmap, incorporating Smart Factory and Industry 4.0 initiatives.
  • Ensure alignment of OT projects with site and divisional strategies.
  • Promote a standardised approach to automation across the site, leveraging best available technologies.

Project Delivery & Compliance

  • Oversee the governance of OT-related projects, ensuring third-party suppliers and integrators comply with established standards.
  • Evaluate and support the design, execution, commissioning, and validation of technical solutions.

Lifecycle Management

  • Own the full lifecycle of OT infrastructure, applications, and support services.
  • Implement structured processes for system retention, retirement, and replacement.
  • Ensure OT systems remain compliant, available, and fit for purpose.
  • Support the development and upskilling of automation engineers to meet current and future operational and project demands.
  • Collaborate with peer sites to ensure alignment with best practices across the network.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in a technical/engineering function within a manufacturing or operations environment.
  • Proven experience in the delivery and management of automated systems in cGMP environments.
  • Strong knowledge of GAMP software lifecycle, ISA standards (S88, S95), and PackML.
  • Familiarity with FDA cGxP, 21 CFR Part 11, and software validation practices.
  • Experience with Siemens PLCs, SCADA, and OSIsoft PI Data Historians is highly desirable.
  • Project management experience is essential.
  • People management experience is preferred but not required.

Key Skills:

  • Ability to manage third-party service providers remotely.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to simplify complex technical topics for diverse audiences.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Exposure to continuous improvement and structured project delivery methodologies.
  • Collaborative, open-minded, and adaptable to change.
