Limerick, Limerick, Ireland General Motors Full time

Software-defined vehicles represent a new paradigm for automakers and consumers, fueled by technological advancements and an escalating demand for transportation solutions that are not only intelligent but also safer and more environmentally sustainable. At the core of this transformative shift lies vehicle data – the driving force behind safety, security, commerce, entertainment, energy, and the creation of a seamless user experience.

The creation and adoption of sophisticated data-driven software solutions promises to be a catalyst for heightened efficiency, lowered costs, improved safety, better decision-making, and increased customer satisfaction. At General Motors, we have embarked on an ambitious journey to pioneer next-generation data solutions to support all our business units. The site reliability engineering team has a mission to relentlessly pursue the most efficient way to meet or exceed our customers' expectations of our vehicle data platform.

To fulfill our mission, we are actively expanding our teams in Limerick. We seek individuals who can blend a passion for technology and sustainability with curiosity, rigorous thinking and a strong customer-centric approach. This is an exciting opportunity to have a far-reaching impact on the business, our customers, our communities, and the world. We invite you to join us on this exciting journey toward a better future.

The Role

This is a senior technical leadership role, and we are looking for individuals who have demonstrated success in designing and maintaining large-scale, complex systems. Our engineers have a passion for quality, efficiency, and reliability to help us accelerate and innovate in this exciting and critical space. Our team believes in extreme ownership where we manage the scale, availability, and operations for our applications. As a staff engineer, you'll be creating patterns for reliability, implementing reliability patterns into our applications, and creating observability into our applications to support the vehicle data operations for millions of vehicles on a global scale. You will work with the embedded vehicle teams, data engineers, infrastructure engineers, developer experience, and application teams to bring these services and client experiences to life. As a key member of our SRE team, you'll have the opportunity to shape the future of how we build reliable and efficient software systems for the next generation of transportation.

What you'll do in this role:

  1. Design and implement reliability patterns for client applications, communication protocols, and back-office services.

  2. Operate and influence data collection, processing, and delivery systems that are scalable, resilient, and capable of operating on millions of vehicles at a global scale.

  3. Leverage monitoring and observability tools (e.g. Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog) to ensure system health and reliability.

  4. Lead automation efforts to reduce toil and keep our systems running efficiently.

  5. Lead incident response efforts, participate in on-call rotation, ensure root cause analysis, and drive continuous improvement after incidents.

  6. Drive postmortem processes, focusing on identifying and remediating systemic issues to prevent recurrence.

  7. Participate in mentorship programs to help grow the team from your experiences.

Qualifications:

  1. 8+ years of experience engineering reliability.

  2. Experience building and operating enterprise cloud applications.

  3. Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP, and container orchestration technologies like Kubernetes.

  4. Familiarity with security practices such as DevSecOps, and ensuring secure and compliant infrastructure as part of reliability engineering.

  5. Ability to lead technical decision-making, balancing reliability, performance, and cost.

  6. Ability to make challenging decisions under pressure.

  7. Ability to learn complex systems in order to identify and mitigate incidents.

  8. Ability to work well cross-functionally and navigate through ambiguity.

  9. Strong written and verbal communication skills to both technical and non-technical audiences.

  10. BS/MS/PhD in Computer Science/Engineering preferred.

Hybrid: This position will be located onsite a minimum of three days per week in our Limerick office and 2 days from home.
