Details of Service

The HSE provides a wide range of community and hospital-based Mental Health services across Ireland. These services are evolving from a hospital-centered model to more community and home-based care. It is estimated that up to one in five people will experience mental health issues at some point in their lives. To meet these needs, Mental Health Services are expanding and developing.

We are committed to delivering high standards of recovery-oriented nursing care for clients with a broad spectrum of mental health issues, from basic to complex, severe psychiatric needs. Our services include Adult, Older Adult, Psychiatry of Later Life, Intellectual Disabilities with a Mental Health Diagnosis, and Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS).

CAMHS offers assessment and treatment for young people up to 18 years and their families experiencing mental health difficulties such as depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and ADHD.

Nurse-led services provide extensive opportunities to engage in holistic, quality care, working alongside professionals such as Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Behavioural Therapists, Counsellors, Occupational Therapists, General Practitioners, and Social Workers to achieve the best outcomes for service users and residents.

We actively support ongoing professional development and offer extensive career pathways. Experienced nurses can apply for managerial roles such as Clinical Nurse Manager, while those interested in specialist pathways can develop into roles like Advanced Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Prescriber, and Clinical Nurse Specialist. New nurses are fully supported and mentored.

Reporting Relationship

The post reports to the Assistant Director of Nursing, as relevant, and is accountable to both the Assistant Director of Nursing and the Area Director of Nursing.

Purpose of the Post

The Clinical Nurse Specialist (Mental Health) role aims to:

  • Deliver care aligned with the five core concepts outlined in the Framework for the Establishment of Clinical Nurse Specialist Posts, 4th edition, NCNM 2008.
  • Work as a key member of the multidisciplinary Mental Health team, providing patient/client-centered, quality care.
  • Focus on assessment, planning, delivery, and evaluation of care for patients/clients and their families.
