We're seeking a proactive Safety Officer to lead and support health and safety compliance across drainage maintenance and construction sites. This 6-month contract role ensures alignment with legal standards and fosters a strong safety culture on the ground.

Key Responsibilities

  • Legislation & Compliance: Ensure up-to-date knowledge and implementation of relevant H&S laws. Maintain the H&S legislation register and communicate regulatory changes.

  • Integrated Management System (IMS): Support ISO 9001 & ISO 45001 compliance. Conduct internal audits, update the Safety Statement, and drive improvements.

  • Site Safety & Risk Oversight: Lead weekly site inspections, risk assessments, and safety reviews. Collaborate with engineers and committees on findings and actions.

  • Incident Management: Investigate and report incidents, near-misses, and dangerous occurrences. Track and present safety performance data.

  • Contractor Oversight: Monitor contractor safety practices, particularly in traffic control, lifting operations, and high-risk environments.

  • Training & Safety Culture: Deliver staff inductions, manage annual training plans, and assess training impact. Promote H&S awareness initiatives.

  • Communication & Engagement: Share updates, findings, and policy changes. Actively contribute to safety meetings and support local Safety Reps.

  • System & Document Control: Maintain key safety registers (e.g., chemical, fire, risk assessment), review contractor documentation, and ensure compliance.

RequirementsRequirements

Education:

Essential: Level 7 qualification in Occupational Health & Safety

Preferred: Level 8 in Occupational Health & Safety

Experience:

3+ years in construction, with strong site management and design process knowledge.

Experience in river or flood defence works is a plus.
