Board Members
CEO & Management - Peter McVerry Trust The Role:
Peter McVerry Trust is seeking three new board members including someone with experience in social care and child protection.
As a trustee with expertise in child protection and social care, you will provide strategic leadership, governance, and oversight to ensure the organisation remains compliant with safeguarding regulations and delivers impactful support to vulnerable children and families. You will play a key role in guiding policies, assessing risks, and advising on best practices.
The ideal candidate will be passionate about the charity's values and work.
Key Responsibilities
Provide expertise on social care and safeguarding issues, ensuring policies align with best practices and legal requirements. Support governance and oversight of safeguarding frameworks, ensuring robust risk management. Advise on service delivery to enhance the well-being and protection of vulnerable people, children and young people. Monitor compliance with relevant legislation, including safeguarding laws and social care standards. Collaborate with other trustees to ensure strategic decisions reflect the organisation's mission and safeguarding commitments. Skills and Experience Required:
Responsibilities
Significant experience in social care, safeguarding, child protection, or a related field. In-depth knowledge of safeguarding policies, risk management, and regulatory frameworks. Understanding of governance responsibilities within a charity or public sector organisation. Strong strategic thinking and decision-making skills. Commitment to the mission and values of the organisation Charities Regulator's General Duties of a Charity Trustee:
Comply with the charity's governing document. Ensure the charity is complying with its charitable purpose for the public benefit. Act in the best interest of the charity. Act with reasonable care and skill. Manage the assets of the charity.
Board Meetings
A board and committee meeting schedule is provided annually with adequate notice for those attending.
The board meets approximately six times a year.
All board meetings are normally held in person in the PMVT Head Office in Dublin at 18:00 for a duration of 2.5 hours.
Board members have an option to join online, however, in person attendance is preferred where possible. Committee Meetings: All trustees are encouraged to join at least one committee, particularly in an area of expertise identified in the board skills audit.
There are currently five committees which convene online, with a varying number of meetings depending on the committee. Committee meetings last for 1.5 hours. The Finance, Audit & Governance Committee meetings take place at 18:00 while the other committees convene during office hours.
The current committees are: Finance, Audit & Governance Committee Housing Services & Asset Management Committee HR Committee Research & Services Committee Nomination & Selection Committee Overall, it is anticipated that a board member will spend approximately 10 days per year on work for PMVT. This will include attendance at board meetings, board committee meetings, the AGM, and potentially one annual board away day a year. In addition, they will be required to consider all relevant papers prior to each meeting Trustees will also be expected to attend a number of events and be available for telephone conversations by mutual agreement. Once a year the board will review itself to ensure that it is functioning to the best of its aims and ability.
An external board evaluation is planned to take place within the next 12 months. Trustees will also be expected to undertake annual training in matters relating to their role as a director and charity trustee.
