As a Senior Software Engineer at Optum, you will be a key hands-on contributor within a team of talented software engineers. You will be a collaborative self-starter who is passionate about design, that can take ownership and drive results. Primary Responsibilities of the Senior Software Engineer:

  1. Design, develop, and operate secure cloud platform services and software that meet business requirements.
  2. Ensure that technical solutions align with architectural principles, design patterns, and enterprise security requirements.
  3. Demonstrate innovation, streamline processes, and reduce technical debt by standardizing patterns.
  4. Automate repetitive tasks, monitor applications, simplify work practices, define metrics, and ensure the operational quality of applications.
  5. Manage security controls at the platform level to enable secure, efficient, and policy compliant operations.
  6. Collaborate with multiple partner teams to communicate information security guidance and standards and reduce information security risks.
  7. Provide coaching, mentoring, and leadership to the Cloud Platform team to improve their skills and knowledge.

Required Qualifications of the Senior Software Engineer:

  1. Strong experience as a software development engineer or equivalent hands-on experience producing code for production systems.
  2. Proven experience working with Public Cloud providers such as AWS, Azure, GCP, beyond basic IaaS functionality.
  3. Experience programming in at least one high-level language (Java, C#, Python, Golang, JavaScript, etc.)
  4. Engineering experience in building infrastructure using code and repeatable designs (IaC)
  5. Previous experience in CI/CD practices and tools, specifically GitHub Actions and Jenkins, and source control systems such as Git.
  6. Experience with containers and orchestration platforms, such as Kubernetes.

Preferred Qualifications of the Senior Software Engineer:

  1. Proven excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  2. Experience with containers and orchestration platforms, such as Kubernetes.
  3. Evidence-based approach to decision-making and problem-solving.
  4. Design mindset with the ability to construct scalable, distributed services.
  5. Proficient in algorithms, data structures, object-oriented programming, and system design.
  6. Knowledge of API design and lifecycle management (REST, etc.).
  7. Expertise in data storage, caching, and optimization (SQL and NoSQL databases).
  8. Familiarity with inter-service messaging and stream discovery (SQS, Pub/Sub Kafka, etc.).
  9. Proficiency in instrumentation, logging, and tracing tools (Prometheus, CloudWatch, Azure Monitor, etc.).
