Job Description:

Amazon Central Technical Operations Services (CTOS) maintains high availability for the Amazon Retail Website and provides the first line of incident response to protect it. Our goal is to make customer-impacting events shorter, less frequent, and less severe by managing large-scale incidents effectively. The Amazon Retail Website serves hundreds of millions of customers globally, and our work helps mitigate issues that could impact these users.

Operating across multiple countries and involving thousands of cloud-based services maintained by tens of thousands of engineers, this is a complex and dynamic environment. When major issues occur, your team will respond swiftly to minimize impact. This role offers exposure to Amazon's diverse operations and opportunities to collaborate with leaders across various business units.

This position is part of a globally distributed team of 45+ professionals across Seattle, Austin, Dublin, and Sydney, providing around-the-clock coverage. The team works in 10-hour shifts, four days a week. If you're seeking a role with significant growth potential and impact, this is an excellent opportunity.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Driving resolution of large-scale customer-impacting issues as part of a rotation team
  • Designing, building, and enhancing incident detection and management tools
  • Participating in Agile sprints to improve processes and technologies
  • Creating and reviewing documentation and standard operating procedures
  • Identifying recurring platform issues and leading projects to improve them
  • Mentoring peers in your areas of expertise

Basic qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science or related field
  • Relevant non-internship software development experience
  • Experience with at least one modern object-oriented programming language such as Java or C++
  • Proven ability to ship large, complex, scalable systems in an agile environment
  • Knowledge of professional software engineering practices including Agile, coding standards, code reviews, source control, build processes, testing, and operations

Preferred qualifications:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Leadership, project planning, communication, and execution skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Effective communication with technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Confidence in managing large conference calls
  • Understanding of routing protocols and troubleshooting networking issues
  • Experience in customer problem resolution under pressure
  • Experience with large-scale distributed systems
  • Experience with AWS technologies and distributed service-oriented architectures
