Meta is seeking a Lead Counsel, of Data Protection for the EMEA region. The position will provide a multitude of legal support for data protection related issues across Meta's family of apps and services. You will manage existing and emerging data protection related issues across the region and advise internal teams on compliance and legal risks. The role requires big picture thinking, good judgment, a great work ethic and a keen interest in learning about new technologies and areas of the law. As part of the role, you will partner closely with other legal teams and internal stakeholders from across the business, helping to set strategy across key areas.

Lead Counsel, Data Protection Responsibilities:
  1. Analyse Meta's products, policies and initiatives to provide practical legal risk mitigation strategies for products across multiple jurisdictions.
  2. Coordinate with our Data Protection Office and provide policy, product, engineering, and other business teams with legal advice from a European data protection and regulatory perspective.
  3. Coordinate with public policy and communications colleagues on external communication, policy development, and enforcement decisions.
  4. Provide full service support to wider legal team on European regulatory and litigation matters.
  5. Monitor and respond to developments in data protection and relevant consumer laws (i.e., new laws, regulations, important judgements, regulatory guidance, etc.).
  6. Advise Meta teams on regulatory compliance (and in particular advising on integrity issues) in respect of cutting-edge products, and will be eager to roll up their sleeves and find creative solutions to support the company's innovation.
Minimum Qualifications:
  1. 5+ years of relevant legal experience, including at a law firm or prior in-house experience (applicable litigation, regulatory or product counseling experience will be considered).
  2. In-depth knowledge of legal issues in the area of the operation of online (social media) platforms including a demonstrated understanding of data protection law.
  3. Demonstrated experience to independently, quickly and accurately assess legal, practical and business risks in a deadline-focused environment and make sound judgments under tight deadlines.
  4. Experience working within a global legal team.
  5. Experience working collaboratively with cross-functional teams to get the job done.
  6. Experience of successfully navigating projects that require an analysis of situations and legal decision making requires an evaluation of unclear or ambiguous factors.
  7. Meta requires all employed attorneys to have a law degree or equivalent certificate to permit the practice of law and be appropriately licensed and authorized to practice law for the company in their assigned work location. Unless prohibited under local law, an attorney must hold a current practicing certificate (including where required from the relevant authority in the jurisdiction of the assigned work location) or the local law equivalent bar registration or license as may be applicable.
Preferred Qualifications:
  1. Experience advising clients on risk assessment and mitigation across technology product platforms, mobile, application development, social networking, machine learning, or other Internet technologies.
  2. Prior experience working with internet or technology companies a plus. Experience working directly with European Data Protection Authorities a plus.
