The Coombe Hospital is one of the largest providers of women and newborn health care in the Republic of Ireland. We care for up to 10,000 pregnant women every year. In addition, over 1,000 newborns are admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Centre and over 8,000 adult surgical operations are performed. The hospital provides comprehensive care for women and newborns at local, regional and national levels. The hospital promotes and supports normality in pregnancy and childbirth.

Description

This is a Temporary Position consultant appointment on a Contract 2023 basis under the Consultant Public Only Contract 2023 to The Coombe Hospital.

This post is for 1 day per week (0.2 WTE). There is no on-call commitment. The working hours will typically span 12 hours between 8 am and 10 pm, Monday to Friday, with an agreed day in coordination with existing staff. The duties include:

  • Working as part of a multidisciplinary team under the direction of the Master/CEO and CCOO.
  • Participating in Laboratory Medicine management and working within the Coombe NCSL and Pathology departments.
  • Providing clinical leadership in MDT contexts, including clinical audits, conferences, teaching, and training.
  • Engaging in continuous professional development and quality improvement activities.
Background to the Post

The Haematology and Transfusion Laboratory at The Coombe Hospital has a history dating back to 1829, with formal haematology commitments since 2005 linked to St James's Hospital.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

  • Maintain awareness of patient-centered care in all hospital activities.
  • Ensure implementation of hospital policies in collaboration with the Director of NCSL and hospital leadership.
  • Demonstrate alignment with the hospital's values and promote open communication.
  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team under the guidance of hospital leadership and department directors.
  • Provide clinical leadership and participate in educational and audit activities.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Must be fully trained to the level of Consultant Haematologist.
  • Demonstrate leadership qualities.
  • Additional experience in other specialist areas is desirable.
  • Responsible for clinical and laboratory haematology consultation, without direct patient management responsibilities, ensuring continuity of care through collaboration with colleagues.
Additional Duties

The post-holder will:

  • Provide haematology and transfusion services.
  • Participate in education, training, and audits.
  • Attend various departmental and management meetings.
  • Review and approve quality assurance results and laboratory procedures.
  • Contribute to service development and ensure service quality and efficiency.
  • Offer expert consultation and participate in hospital educational activities.
