Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW) – INIS

Inis Environmental Consultants Ltd. (INIS) is seeking a full-time Ecological Clerk of Work (ECoW) to join our Ecology team. The role can be based in Ennis, Cork or Dublin and involves working on on-site biodiversity protection and enhancement during construction across Ireland.

Responsibilities
  • Advise on protecting valued biodiversity features on construction sites.
  • Provide practical, site-specific and proportionate guidance to help clients achieve compliance with environmental legislation.
  • Review relevant documents including AA/NIS, EcIA, CEMP and species/habitat management plans.
  • Consult with local planning authorities, Biodiversity officers, NPWS, and Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI).
  • Conduct pre-construction and construction phase checks for protected species.
  • Provide ecological watching brief during vegetation clearance, building works, habitat translocation, creation, enhancement, or management projects.
  • Maintain daily records, sign off construction documents, and produce reports for auditing purposes.
Qualifications and Experience
  • A third-level qualification in environmental science, zoology, ecology or a similar discipline.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience on a broad range of ecological projects, including practical conservation advice or management.
  • Understanding of Irish and EU environmental protection and wildlife legislation and planning guidelines.
  • Excellent communication skills (face-to-face with clients/contractors, as well as verbal and written).
  • Full driving license and willingness to travel to sites.
Desirable Skills and Experience
  • Proven experience as an ECoW or similar field-based ecological role.
  • Knowledge of construction management, civil engineering and project management.
  • Membership of CIEEM or AEnvCoW, or ability to attain within three months of appointment.
  • Excellent IT skills.
