Membership on the board of the Laois Volunteer Centre is an exciting opportunity to help guide and govern the first Volunteer Centre in the county.
The Volunteer Centre was set up with the guidance of Volunteer Ireland in 2020 and is an independent entity within the network of volunteer centres around Ireland. The service is delivered by a Manager and Development Officer, Outreach Officer, and Migrant Support Officer.
A Company Limited by Guarantee with Charitable Status, it is funded primarily by the Department of Rural and Community Development as part of a policy to drive volunteerism in Ireland.
The Purpose of this RoleThe Laois Volunteer Centre is looking for a member of the board of directors with a focus on law and governance. The role involves playing an active role in the organisation's governance and strategic direction, while taking a leading role on governance and legal matters.
Support & TrainingLaois Volunteer Centre can fund board director training, and all board members are encouraged to undertake training as part of their new role. Training needs will be identified on an ad hoc basis, and also through a board review process.
Time CommitmentIt is estimated at about 10 hours per year for board and committee meetings with additional time required to read papers and prepare in advance of each meeting, plus involvement in sub-committees and advisory roles.

Essential Experience, Skills and Personal Qualities- Have professional experience and / or have an academic and /or vocational qualification in the Law.
- Understanding of good governance and experience of implementing good governance practice in the private, non-profit or public sector
- Experience writing and/or reviewing governance policies and procedures
- Experience of strategic planning and service development
- An enquiring mind, with the confidence to challenge constructively
- Understanding of the Charities Regulator's Governance Code
The ideal candidate will have experience as a volunteer or volunteer manager, board level experience in the non-profit sector, or experience in a non-profit organisation in Ireland.
Residing in Laois or having knowledge of the county would be helpful in advancing the aims of Laois Volunteer Centre.
