Overview of role:

UPMC Aut Even Hospital is recruiting a Theatre Nurse on a part-time, permanent basis. This role involves working 24 hours per week within a multidisciplinary team in the operating theatre and endoscopy suite, providing evidence-based care to surgical patients. We are hiring nurses for theatre, endoscopy, anaesthetics, and recovery services. The hospital offers services in General Medicine, Respiratory, Care of the Elderly, Gastroenterology, Cardiology, and various surgical specialties including general surgery, ophthalmology, gynaecology, ENT, orthopaedics, plastics, urology, vascular surgery, and oral surgery. A perioperative staff nurse may be assigned to any area within Anaesthetics, Scrub, Circulating, PACU, or Endoscopy within their scope of practice.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Professional Responsibilities

• Practice according to the Code of Professional Conduct laid down by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland and clinical guidelines.
• Adhere to hospital policies and protocols at all times.
• Work within your scope of practice, maintaining high standards of professional behaviour and accountability.
• Provide caring, efficient, and professional nursing services.
• Respect patient privacy, dignity, and confidentiality.
• Coordinate ward management in the absence of senior staff.
• Mentor and support new staff members.
• Participate in anaesthetic, scrub, circulating, PACU, or endoscopy duties as required.
• Prepare equipment and instruments, update consultant preference cards.
• Assist in the effective operation of the Endoscopy Unit, including patient assessment and care.
• Communicate effectively within the multidisciplinary team to ensure continuity of care and safety.
• Manage resources efficiently within the department.
• Participate in staff education and training.
• Check equipment before use and report faults.
• Observe infection control policies, maintain asepsis, and ensure a sterile environment.
• Prepare patients for endoscopy procedures, including sedation or general anaesthesia.
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge and skills in endoscopy and nursing practice.

Scrub / Circulating

• Provide nursing care for surgical patients and assist surgeons during procedures.
• Maintain standards in pre- and post-operative care.
• Support patients and families holistically.
• Prepare the operating room for scheduled procedures.
• Maintain aseptic techniques during surgery.
• Ensure proper controlled drug records and adherence to legal and professional standards.
• Supervise less experienced staff and participate in their education.

Qualifications & Experience:

• Registered in the General Division of the NMBI register.
• Basic Life Support certification.
• At least 2 years of theatre nursing experience.
• A relevant theatre qualification is advantageous.
