About the role of Marine Engineer Officer:
The role of the Marine Engineer Officer sits within the Engineering profession and is a key role and an essential member of the ships company. We are looking for highly motivated individuals who combine professional skills with leadership ability and the desire to take their careers to exciting new places. As a Marine Engineer Officer:
- During a sea posting you will fill the role of engineering department head and will be a key member of the ship's senior management team, responsible for the leading, training and welfare of the Engineering Branch personnel.
- You will be responsible for supervising all engineering work, ordering required spare parts and for the professional development of all engineering staff under your command.
- You will be responsible for the maintenance and operation of essential equipment on board required to keep the ship moving. This includes the hull and structure of the ship, its main engines and auxiliary machinery with associated fuel and water requirements, electrical supply systems, deck machinery and hotel systems (showers, sanitary, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration, heating).
- Following completion of mandatory training courses, you will be responsible for all fire and hull breach scenarios onboard including the training of the ships company and maintenance of equipment.
On completion of a sea rotation, you will be posted into a shore appointment in the Naval Dockyard, Naval Base or the Naval College (NMCI) in Haulbowline, Cork and will be responsible for some of the following: Project Management, Maintenance Planning, Researching New Equipment, Planning and Ordering. You will be responsible for ensuring all engineering defects and planned maintenance routines are completed prior to the ship recommencing operational activities.
- On completion of a sea rotation, you will be encouraged to avail of internal training courses and funded continual professional development (CPD) in such disciplines as Project Management, Engineering masters programmes, H&S third level qualifications etc. with the ultimate goal of becoming a Chartered Engineer.
Essential Requirements:
At the time of application, all applicants for appointment as a Marine Engineering Officer in the Naval Service must meet the following:
1. General Requirements:
- be a citizen of the Irish State
- OR have a legal entitlement to reside and work in the State for the period of any such appointment.
- AND be of good character and satisfy any security clearance required during the recruitment process.
- AND meet the required minimum standards of medical and physical fitness as assessed during the recruitment process.
2. Age Requirements:
Candidates must be less than 50 years of age on 31 December in the year of application.
3. Professional Qualifications:
- a Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport Certificate of Competency (Marine Engineering Officer) Class 1 or Class 2 with relevant.
- OR a marine qualification that is deemed by the Minister for Defence to be at least equivalent to the qualifications at subparagraph (i) above.
Recruitment Process:
Please note, candidates will be invited to attend a competency-based interview where they will be required to draw from their relevant experience. Candidates who are invited to attend before an Interview Board will be required to complete and sign a Garda Vetting Application Form.
Pay and Allowances:
A competitive basic starting salary of €57,955 with yearly increments. Naval Service personnel receive an additional approx. €20,570 per annum. Additional allowances for overseas service are not included. This allowance starts at €15,000 per annum in addition to your salary and is tax free.
