Job Title: Clinical Nurse Manager 3, Nurse/HCA/ODP Practice Development & Education

Department: Nursing Administration

Reports to: Director of Clinical Services

Overall Purpose of Job

The post holder, will be responsible for the provision of clinical education and professional development in line with the highest standards of nursing and health care assistant practice. He/she will work with the Director of Clinical Services/Director of Nursing in developing the strategy for nursing and ensuring continuous professional development of nursing and health care assistant groups across the hospital.

As a member of the senior nursing team, the postholder will demonstrate professional strategic and leadership skills, facilitating effective communication with clinicians across the hospital. The position requires a strategic approach to the development of a Clinical Education program, whilst ensuring continuous quality improvement and achievement of the organisational objectives.

The post holder requires an in-depth knowledge of nursing and work experience in providing clinical education.

Key Responsibilities and Deliverables

· Develop and lead a Clinical Education programme

· Promote an environment for professional nursing practise, which is consistent with mission, vision and values of Beacon Hospital.

· Ensure the effective delivery of nursing practice in line with NMBI standards.

· Manage the nursing/healthcare assistant quality assurance programmes so as to support and ensure delivery of the highest standard of patient focused care.

· Further develop, engage and promote person centred nursing practises through the care processes, which enhances clinical effectiveness and patient outcomes.

Education.

· Ensure that the competency goals for Nurses and Healthcare Assistants is evidence based and are completed at unit level

· Facilitate change and play a key role I promoting the nursing and corporate developments.

Management and Organisation

  • Support the Director of Clinical Services (DOCS) with the strategic and future delivery of nursing education
  • Provide strategic and clinical leadership.
  • Facilitate staff team building.
  • Attend and participate in interdisciplinary meetings.
  • Develop, lead and manage the Clinical Education programme.
  • Implement excellence in nursing practice, to meet organisational objectives within agreed timescales.
  • Establish key performance indicators for practise within the clinical setting
  • Provide leadership on quality issues and implement the nursing service relating to quality assurance.
  • Ensure policies are up to date on Q-Pulse.
  • Ensure that documentation meets national guidelines as well as guidelines of the Joint Commission International Standards (JCI).
  • Prepare work schedules and project plans to achieve organisational objectives.
  • Present clinical education to teams.
  • Responsible for coordinating and facilitating a schedule of education, professional development and clinical audit.
  • Participate in relevant nursing research, promoting research awareness within the nursing service.
  • Demonstrate evidence of planning, good time management and the ability to use your own initiative.
  • Demonstrate ability to motivate the team.
  • Facilitate and promote sharing a range of practice-based initiatives across the hospital.
  • Provide reports, and support the ongoing quality improvement programmes.
  • Manage the Clinical Educators and Clinical Facilitators
  • Provide support and oversight for the further education in the enhanced role for health care assistants
  • Advise nursing staff in relation to evidence-based practice, and models of care in order to support the development of appropriate standards of care.

· Actively and positively participates in the ongoing preparations to ensure readiness for HIQA, JCI and JAG Accreditation and the sustainability of same in alignment with Beacon Hospital Strategic Plan.

  • Ensures the competence of staff is monitored through regular meetings and undertaking performance reviews in achieving agreed goals through facilitation and mentorship.

Education and Training

  • Work in collaboration with third level institutes to develop and implement educational frameworks for clinical education programmes.
  • Lead the Nurse Educators and Facilitators to deliver nursing and healthcare assistant education.

Interprofessional Working

· Maintains good working relationships with departments, physicians, allied healthcare therapies, patients, families and outside agencies.

· Demonstrates effective communication with the Director of Clinical Services and Assistant Directors of Nursing.

· Work as part of a multidisciplinary team.

· Collaborate with a range of education and training providers, to develop and deliver clinical education.

· Demonstrates willingness to assist co-workers whenever needed.

· Provide coaching support to clinical staff, responding to individual learning needs.

· Demonstrate effective writing and presentational skills.

Personal/Professional Responsibilities

The post holder is expected to:

· Be a registered nurse on the Register of Nurses and Midwives held by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI).

· Maintain a professional portfolio.

· Ensure their professional and personal persona positively reflects the profession of nursing and Beacon Hospital.

· Identify potential and beneficial topics for clinical education.

· Utilise all practical opportunities to educate the team.

· Attend related study days and courses.

· Participate in their performance review with the Director of Clinical Services.

· Attend all mandatory education sessions.

· Keep up to date with nursing literature, clinical research and new developments in healthcare.

· Identify and participate in activities to enhance own personal development.

· Support staff in the application of a range of codes and practice policies.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintains a professional appearance.
  • Complies with guidelines for absence or tardiness.
  • Attends staff meetings, reading emails and keeping up to date with hospital communications.
  • Attends all required in-services.
  • All employees are expected to remain flexible to meet the needs of the hospital, which may include floating to other departments to assist as the patient needs fluctuate.
  • Wears identification badge when working.
  • Adheres to all Beacon Hospital policies.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • NMBI Registered General Nurse licence.
  • Post graduate qualification in education at level 9 or higher is essential.
  • Completed a Teaching and Assessing course.
  • Experience in delivering education in a university setting
  • Candidates must possess the requisite knowledge and ability to conduct duties outlined in the job description.

Experience

  • 5 years post registration experience in nursing.
  • A minimum of 2 years' experience in clinical education, practice development, education or quality improvement.
  • Candidates must possess teaching abilities, leadership qualities, professional judgment, critical thinking and problem-solving abilities and a sense of professional development.
  • Experience of supervising a clinical team.
