As we continue to invest and expand, we are seeking an experienced and driven Financial Controller to establish our financial framework, lead strategic financial operations, and provide critical insights to drive our growth.
Position Overview
This is a unique opportunity to build and shape the finance function from the ground up within a dynamic digital health startup.
As the Financial Controller, you will report directly to the CEO and serve as a key strategic partner to the senior leadership team and the board.
You will play a pivotal role in establishing robust financial systems, ensuring compliance, and providing the financial stewardship necessary to support our mission and growth objectives.
Key Responsibilities
1. Financial Control Environment
- Develop and Maintain Controls: Establish and maintain a strong internal control environment to safeguard company assets and ensure the integrity of financial records.
- Compliance Management: Ensure compliance with all regulatory and statutory financial requirements, including tax filings and financial reporting standards.
- Liaison with Auditors and Third Parties: Manage relationships with external auditors, tax advisors, and other third-party service providers to ensure accurate and timely financial audits and reviews.
- Robust Reporting: Develop and implement comprehensive financial reporting systems to provide accurate and timely financial information to stakeholders.
2. Financial Planning & Analysis
- Forecasting and Budgeting: Design, manage, and continuously improve the company's financial forecasting, budgeting, and planning processes.
- Data Analysis: Analyse financial data to identify trends, risks, and opportunities, optimizing for growth and profitability.
- KPI Development: Develop and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to track and enhance business performance.
3. Operational Excellence
- Day-to-Day Financial Operations: Oversee accounts receivable/payable, payroll, tax compliance, and cash flow management to ensure smooth financial operations.
- Financial Closing Processes: Manage monthly, quarterly, and annual financial closing processes, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
- System Assessment: Evaluate and implement financial systems and tools that scale with the business as it grows, ensuring efficiency and effectiveness.
4. Investment and Funding Management
- Support Fundraising Activities: Collaborate with the board to manage incoming investments, ensuring proper allocation and reporting.
- Financial Modelling and Valuation Support: Assist in preparing financial models and supporting valuations for future fundraising rounds.
- Investor Relations Support: Provide necessary financial information and insights to support investor relations managed by the board.
5. Strategic Financial Leadership
- Strategic Insights: Partner with the CEO and leadership team to deliver strategic financial insights, aiding in key business decisions and long-term planning.
- Board Reporting: Present clear and insightful financial reports, forecasts, and performance updates to the board and other key stakeholders.
- Future Financial Planning: Prepare the company for future growth phases by developing scalable financial strategies and frameworks.
6. Team Building & Development
- Foundation for Finance Team: Lay the groundwork for a future finance team by establishing best practices and scalable processes.
- Hiring and Mentoring: Hire, mentor, and develop finance staff as the company expands, fostering a collaborative and high-performing team environment.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work collaboratively across departments to ensure alignment on financial goals and execution.
Skills and Qualifications
Essential Skills
- Fully qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA).
- Preferably trained in a Big 4 accounting firm with at least 3 to 5 years of post-qualification experience within the industry.
- Proven experience in a senior finance role, ideally as a Financial Controller in a startup, scale-up, or high-growth environment.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to present complex financial data to non-financial stakeholders and the board.
- Strategic thinker with strong analytical skills and meticulous attention to detail.
- Hands-on approach with a willingness to engage actively in a fast-paced and entrepreneurial environment.
Desirable Skills
- Experience in fundraising and financial modelling
- Familiarity with SaaS metrics or other relevant industry KPIs.
- Proficiency in modern financial tools and systems, with the ability to assess and implement new technologies as needed.
