Job Description:

RS-01 Post doctoral Researcher – Integrated Magnetics: Design and Simulation

Contract: Full Time/Fixed Term

Established in 2004, the Tyndall National Institute is one of Europe's leading centres in ICT research and development. It hosts over 460 researchers, engineers and support staff. It has a network of over 200 industry partners and customers worldwide. Tyndall performs breakthrough research in photonics, electronics, micro/nano-technology and smart systems to deliver innovative solutions in the communications, energy, medtech, bio-pharmaceuticals, agricultural and the environmental sectors.

Integrated Magnetics Group

The Integrated Magnetics group performs world leading research in thin film magnetic material systems, their associated processing techniques and magnetic component design. These components are appropriate for creating highly integrated power systems, capable of efficiently operating at frequencies up to 100 MHz. The magnetic components which include inductors, coupled-inductors and transformers are the basis of next generation Power-System-In-Package (PwrSiP) and Power-System-On-Chip (PwrSoC) solutions. The group's activities have very strong commercial relevance with Research and Development partners spanning the world's major component suppliers, silicon foundries, wafer-level assembly houses and SoC manufacturers.

The group is both industry and research focused. Consequently, high impact, high quality Journal and Conference publications are a key objective for the group.

Key Responsibilities

  • This Post-Doctoral Researcher role will involve modelling / design of advanced integrated magnetics devices, on-silicon or in a laminate package. The successful candidate will be an important part of a highly motivated team aiming to achieve excellent research results that significantly add to knowledge in the area. The researcher will liaise closely with magnetic material scientists, fabrication research engineers and integrated power systems designers.
  • The design of integrated magnetic devices includes the use of analytical models, and Finite Element Modelling using Maxwell 3D, and/or HFSS, and/or Keysight ADS, and/or Cadence Clarity etc. to determine the geometric design required to give the targeted magnetic material parameters and device values of inductance, resistance and Q-factor.
  • The Electromagnetic Design Researcher is expected lead the design of innovative passive electromagnetic devices towards higher efficiency and miniaturization. The researcher is also expected to become an expert in building test circuit models to extract key electromagnetic properties of materials. Further, they will be required to become conversant with the material properties and the expected electrical characteristics of integrated magnetic devices.
  • Compliance with Tyndall's Quality Management System based Health and Safety standards is a natural aspect of the role.

Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.

  • PhD in Electrical, Electronics, Materials Science, Physics, or related discipline
  • Good understanding of the operation of high-frequency inductors and capacitors
  • Experience in the modelling / design of high frequency magnetic devices and circuits
  • Experience in the high frequency characterisation of electrical components
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Good planning, organisational and interpersonal skills
  • Evidence of Strong written communications skills
  • Self-motivated researcher who can drive the innovative models with supporting methodology proposed
