Offer Description

Neuroadapt is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie COFUND Action for Postdoctoral Fellowships led by Futureneuro, the Research Ireland Centre for Translational Brain Science. This world-leading multi-disciplinary centre uniquely focuses on making discoveries and developing technologies that can solve the urgent, unmet needs of people living with neurological, psychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders. The overall objective of Neuroadapt is to equip the next generation of researcher leaders with the skills (scientific & transferable) necessary to 1) catalyse their careers, both in academia and beyond, and 2) develop innovative, safer, and more effective diagnostic, therapeutic and health-care approaches to brain diseases tailored specifically towards individual patient needs.

Neuroadapt applicants will choose, based on their individual preferences & needs, from a wide range of research areas, host organisations, supervisors and secondment organisations. Novel proposals can be submitted around three broad, interdisciplinary themes:

  1. Therapeutics: Research into the causes of brain disease, focusing on noncoding RNAs, metabolic and epigenetic processes, the blood-brain barrier and neuroinflammation using technologies including super-resolution imaging, single-cell 'omics and neurophysiology.
  2. Diagnostics: Identification and validation of novel disease markers, including genetic risk factors and both wet and dry biomarkers, novel point-of-care diagnostics and leveraging AI to large datasets to enhance the accuracy of diagnosis with an ultimate aim to create a stratified, research-engaged patient population to enable faster diagnosis, precision medicine and clinical trials.
  3. Digital Health: The development of personalised, accessible, proactive, and preventive healthcare solutions, enabled by digital technologies, specifically tailored for those impacted by neurological and neuropsychiatric diseases.

In 2025, Neuroadapt aims to fund at least 6 high-caliber Postdoctoral Fellowships of 24 months. Depending on their supervisor, incoming fellows will be hosted in one of the eight FutureNeuro-affiliated universities in Ireland. Through the wider FutureNeuro network, they will also have access to much broader research and clinical infrastructure. Global options are also available.

The award will provide for salary (indicative range € 57K – 65K Gross amount) allowances depending on host and applicant status. Mobility allowance, research costs, training and career development programme will be additional to salary.

Eligibility

Neuroadapt Fellowships are for Postdoctoral researchers from any country, seeking a prestigious, career-building base in Ireland. For full eligibility criteria please read the call documentation on our website.

Applicants should:

  • Hold a PhD on 15th January 2025, or have defended their PhD and received unconditional approval.
  • Have spent less than 12 months of the previous 36 in Ireland (relaxed / alternative mobility rules apply under certain conditions, and for global fellowships).
How to Apply

Via an open call for research proposals on Neuroadapt themes, accessed through our website. Selection will take place through independent peer review followed by interview. Full submission guidelines, terms and instructions can be found on our website.

Applications encouraged from Scholars / Researchers at Risk; please contact us for additional support.

Years of Research Experience: 1 - 4

Neuroadapt Fellows will be offered fixed-term or specific purpose Research Fellow employment contracts from the host institution of their Supervisor for the duration of the fellowship. The terms of the employment contract will be in line with the Terms of Employment (Information) Acts 1994–2014, Ireland, which ensures provision of pensions, vacation / maternity / parental and carers leave, accident insurance cover and access to healthcare.

The award will provide for salary (indicative range € 57K – 65K Gross amount) allowances depending on host and applicant status. Mobility allowance, research costs, training and career development programme will be additional to salary.

Selection Process

After the call closes, all applications will first be checked for completeness and eligibility. Applicants will be informed of the result by email. If an application is found ineligible, the reason will be stated and the submission rejected. Note that documentary evidence of eligibility will only be requested should the application be reviewed successfully and selected for award.

International Expert Review and Ranking

All eligible applications will undergo independent, international remote review. Each proposal will be evaluated by a minimum of three experts. Applications will be scored and ranked according to the Neuroadapt Assessment Criteria (Appendix III). At the end of the stage, applicants will receive a summary of their score and feedback, and the decision on their progression to interview.

Interviews of Top-Ranking Applicants

The set of top-ranked applicants will be invited for a 30-minute remote interview. During the interview, the applicant will give a 10-minute presentation on the scientific project and an overview of their career development and training objectives. This will be followed by 20 minutes of questions from the interview panel.

The interview is a time for the candidates to discuss the research proposal and demonstrate that they understand what the Fellowship has to offer and have the desire and competency required for its execution. It will also give the candidates an opportunity to further explore their research concept and plan, and to learn more about the Neuroadapt environment.

Candidates will then be informed of their evaluation, panel feedback and the award decision.
