Purpose of the Post
To ensure the delivery of a specialist Psycho-Oncology Psychology Service to patients attending our client. This includes multi-disciplinary working, consultancy, liaison, research, teaching, complex psychological assessment, formulation, and treatment of patients (adults) on an individual and group basis. These duties are to be carried out within professional ethics and organisational policies.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

The appointee will provide the following psychological services:

  1. Undertake psychological assessment, formulation, monitoring, and implementation of therapeutic interventions for patients with cancer who have complex medical and psychological needs. This includes high levels of long-term risk assessment and management. They will also undertake accompanying 'systemic' work as appropriate to the case, e.g., liaison with multi-disciplinary staff, inter-agency working, multi-disciplinary meetings, consultancy, and telephone therapy with patients.
  2. Undertake data collection and generate performance and quality indicators.
  3. Contribute to an ongoing programme of research and service development.
  4. Through clinical governance and monitoring of patients' progress through therapy, the post-holder will assess the effectiveness of their own practices using appropriate pre- and post-intervention assessment tools.
  5. Make recommendations to medical, nursing, and allied health professional colleagues regarding current and future psychological management. Such recommendations require adept communication and relationship skills.
  6. Provide supervision to non-psychology staff regarding the implementation of psychological treatment programmes as appropriate.
  7. Prepare and deliver specialist teaching and training on psychological aspects of psycho-oncology patient care to staff as appropriate.
  8. Record personally generated clinical observations in patients' clinical psychology files.
  9. Ensure formulations and process-related information are documented to support clinical decision-making regarding the patient's case, including necessary details should the patient present in the future to a different clinician.
  10. Communicate relevant information to the referring consultant physician/surgeon and general practitioner while maintaining patient confidentiality. Regularly update intervention plans and recommendations for future psychological management.
  11. Provide professional reports and information to other professional staff as appropriate.
  12. Liaise with patients and their families regarding communication of sensitive and distressing information from the medical team.
  13. Liaise with medical staff as appropriate on the ward in relation to patient cases.
  14. Liaise with external agencies (e.g., social work, community psychiatric nurses, psychiatry) as appropriate to the case.
  15. Present relevant information at case conferences as appropriate, including to medical and nursing personnel, the patient, and their family.
  16. Perform other duties appropriate to the role of Senior Psychologist as may be assigned.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility is split into the following categories:

  • Category A: Employed pre-October 2002.
  • Category B: Employed between October 2002 and 31 January 2021.
  • Category C: Employed between 31 January 2021 and 30 September 2024.
  • Category A/2024: Qualified pre-1 October 2024 and employed post-1 October 2024.
  • Category B/2024: Qualified post-1 October 2024.

Applicants with qualifications obtained outside Ireland must have a Statement of Equivalence from the Department of Health to work as a Psychologist in Ireland at the time of application.

Accountability

  1. Satisfy the criteria for Registered Psychologist status with the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI).
  2. Register as a psychologist with CORU once registration is opened.
  3. Undertake regular clinical supervision with the Principal Clinical Psychologist.
  4. Participate in research and evaluate programmes within the service as appropriate.
  5. Liaise and co-operate with all multidisciplinary team members as appropriate to ensure optimal service provision.
  6. Report to the Principal Clinical Psychologist.
  7. Carry out any other duties assigned from time to time.

Information Technology

  • Ensure effective and efficient use of IT for patient care and administration in a manner that integrates well with organisational systems.
  • Collect, interpret, and present data on departmental activities, staffing, and expenditure in conjunction with departmental staff.

Health & Safety

  • Ensure compliance with the Health, Safety, and Welfare at Work Act, along with adherence to our client's policies and values.
