THE POSITIONUnder general supervision, to perform the work of a journey-level carpenter and cabinetmaker; and to do related work as required. For detailed information about the classification, please visit: Carpenter (#9220).
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSEither I: The equivalent of four years' full-time experience as a Building Maintenance Worker II in the Alameda County classified service. (Non-classified includes District Attorney's Office, Hospital Authority and Consolidated Courts.)
Or II: Education: Successful completion of a recognized four-year apprenticeship in the carpentry/cabinetmaker trade. And Experience: The equivalent of three years' experience as a journey-level carpenter or cabinetmaker. Additional experience as a journey-level carpenter or cabinetmaker may substitute for an apprenticeship on a year-for-year basis. License: Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's license. Special Requirements: Must be able to lift up to 75 pounds safely. Must be able and willing to work outside in all types of weather conditions. Must be able to climb and work from ladders and/or scaffolding. Must be able and willing to work in confined areas. Must be able to use a respirator. Must comply with the medical surveillance program related to lead and asbestos, as required by OSHA/Cal-OSHA. Must be able to obtain and maintain security clearance. Note: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLSThe most suitably qualified candidates will possess the following competencies:
- Knowledge of: Modern methods, materials, hand and power tools, and equipment used in rough and finished carpentry and in cabinet making. Building, Fire, Life Safety and OSHA safety codes. General construction safety practices. Hazardous Materials Awareness (asbestos, lead paint, MSDS). Basic computer skills including knowledge of Outlook. Mathematical calculations used in the carpentry trade.
- Ability to: Skillfully use the tools and equipment of the carpenter's and cabinetmaker's trades. Work safely. Communicate clearly orally and in writing. Provide excellent customer service. Follow written and oral instructions. Work independently as well as part of a team. Plan, organize, prioritize and keep track of assignments and materials. Collaborate and coordinate with other trades. Supervise non-journey workers. Adapt to changing work priorities. Keep tools and materials secure.
The examination will consist of the following steps: A review of applicants' applications and supplemental questionnaire responses to verify possession of minimum requirements. Those candidates who possess the minimum requirements for the class will move on to the next step in the examination process. An performance examination which will be weighted as 100% of the candidate's final examination score. Candidates must attain a qualifying rating on each portion of this examination.
