Salary: Appointment will be made on the Medical Scientist Scale (€44,331 - €72,268, LSI1 €73,667) at a point in line with Government pay policy

Hours of work: Full-Time, 35 hours per week

Responsibilities
  1. To participate in the laboratory working roster encompassing working hours and luncheon intervals.
  2. Reports to the Chief Medical Scientist in the Histo/neuropathology Department and/or report on a day to day basis to the designated Senior Medical Scientist in charge.
  3. To perform the Histo/neuropathology work to the highest professional standards as determined by the Consultant in Charge/Chief Medical Scientist.
  4. Participate in training staff and students as required.
  5. Ensure in co-operation with the Consultant in Charge/Chief Medical Scientist /designated senior staff, appropriate compliance with International and National Guidelines and Standards for the provision of Histo/neuropathology Lab service and actively participate in Internal and External Quality Control.
  6. Actively participate in and promote continuing education and research activities consistent with the post.
  7. Co-operate in evaluating equipment, consumables and research projects.
  8. Observe the strictest confidence when dealing with all aspects of patient or Hospital information.
  9. The chosen candidate will participate in ensuring that effective safety procedures are in place to comply with Health and Safety at Work Act.
  10. Assist and co-operate with the Laboratory Management team in developing procedures to be followed in preventing and managing accidents occurring in the work area.
  11. To prepare and stain specimens for histological evaluation, according to standard operational procedures.
  12. To perform such other duties appropriate to the office as may be assigned by an officer designated by the Board in consultation with the Consultant in Charge/Chief Medical Scientist/Senior in charge. As per MF-GEN-0098 contained in staff members training folder.
  13. To comply with the requirements of ISO15189 during all activities carried out in the department.

Qualifications

Mandatory:

  • Statutory Registration, Professional Qualifications, Experience, etc
  • Candidates for appointment must be registered, or be eligible for registration, on the Medical Scientists Register maintained by the Medical Scientists Registration Board at CORU.

OR Applicants who satisfy the conditions set out in Section 91 of the Health and Social Care Professionals Act 2005 must submit proof of application for registration with CORU. Acceptable proof is correspondence from CORU confirming their Section 91 application was received by 30 March 2021.

AND Have the requisite knowledge and ability for the proper discharge of the duties of the office.

AND Provide proof of Statutory Registration on CORU before a contract of employment can be issued (Applicable to Section 38 applicants only).

  • Annual registration (Applicable to Section 38 Applicants only)

AND Practitioners must confirm annual registration with CORU to the HSE via the Patient Safety Assurance Certificate (PSAC).

Candidates for and any person holding the office must be fully competent and capable of undertaking the duties attached to the office and be in a state of health such as would indicate a reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and efficient service.

Candidates for and any person holding the office must be of good character.

Note 1 Section 91 candidates are individuals who qualified before 31 March 2019 and have been engaged in the practice of the profession in the Republic of Ireland for a minimum of 2 years full-time (or an aggregate of 2 years full-time) between 31 March 2014 and 31 March 2019.
