Role Summary

We seek a junior- to mid-level data scientist to join our collaborative team of analysts. Your main task will be developing methodologies using Ookla's rich data sets to describe internet performance, helping consumers, service providers, manufacturers, and regulators make informed decisions.

This role requires a solid understanding of networking technologies, inferential statistics, and data programming. Ideal candidates will be curious, creative problem-solvers, excellent communicators, and passionate about data advocacy.

Expectations for Success
  • Lead development of new measurements, KPIs, and models for internet quality of service and experience.
  • Develop statistical testing approaches for measurements and KPIs.
  • Collaborate with data engineers and product managers to turn methodologies into data products.
  • Create methods for anomaly detection and ensure data quality and integrity.
  • Support licensing, sales, presales, and industry analysis efforts.
  • Maintain Ookla's credibility by ensuring quality and consistency across products and outputs.
  • Create tools, documentation, and processes for reproducible reporting and self-service.
  • Stay updated with the latest in data science and tooling.
  • Mentor and support team members.
Minimum Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree in computer science, statistics, data science, or equivalent experience.
  • Strong skills in statistical inference, hypothesis testing, data analysis, and modeling.
  • Experience applying statistical methods to real-world problems.
  • Proficiency in Python or R.
  • SQL skills and experience querying large datasets.
  • Understanding of data pipelines and ETL processes.
  • Experience with cloud platforms like AWS, Azure, or GCP.
  • Excellent communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Proven project ownership and collaboration skills.
  • Dependability and a willingness to learn and teach others.
  • Knowledge of internet, cellular, and broadband technologies.
