Dublin, Dublin City, Ireland Children in Hospital Full time

The Organisation

Children in Hospital Ireland (CIH Ireland) is a national organisation established in 1970 by parents to promote a positive hospital experience for all children and families.

With more than 350 volunteers across 15 hospitals nationwide, CIH Ireland facilitates play and recreation opportunities, thereby easing the experience of hospitalisation for children and their families. In addition, CIH has a team of volunteers providing a welcoming and wayfinding service in CHI at Crumlin. CIH also provides information to families and advocates on behalf of all children and their families to ensure they have access to the supports and services they need, before, during and after hospitalisation.

  • Each year in Ireland there are, on average, over 270,000 hospital visits by children.
  • For over 100,000 children this means an average of a 3-night stay.
  • Every year, 75,000 child inpatients are under 4 years of age and almost all are admitted through A&E – an unexpected and unplanned visit.

Children are particularly vulnerable, both physically and emotionally. For them, being in hospital can be a source of anxiety and fear, especially if they are unexpectedly separated from their family. Along with having to cope with illness, this difficult experience can affect their normal growth and development.

The CIH play service provides engaging and supportive play in wards, playrooms, emergency departments and outpatient departments. Play in hospital creates a sense of normalcy for the child while helping them build the confidence and resilience to cope with their illness. It provides a distraction from the stress of being in hospital while giving parents a break, knowing their child is happy and safe with the play volunteers.

In 2024, CIH commenced a Family Support Programme which supports parents with information and signposting to supports for when they have a child in hospital. The programme offers emotional and practical support to families and carers to help them navigate the childhood hospitalisation journey.

The Role:

CIH Ireland is seeking a Chairperson to lead the Board. This crucial role encompasses guiding the Board in overseeing the organisation's strategic direction, governance, and overall performance. The Chairperson will be responsible for ensuring that the Board operates effectively and that the executive team is held accountable for achieving the organisation's strategic objectives.

The ideal candidate will be a strong facilitator, a decisive, empathetic, and accountable leader, with the expertise to steer the organisation effectively. CIH Ireland encourages applications from people with extensive experience in leadership and governance who are passionate about supporting the organisation's vision.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate effective Board meetings.
  • Provide leadership to the Board.
  • Lead and drive the development of the new strategic plan.
  • Promote exemplary governance among trustees.
  • Emphasise transparency and accountability.
  • Provide continuous support and oversight to the CEO.
  • Collaborate to achieve organisational objectives.
  • Uphold the organisation's integrity.
  • Advocate for and communicate the charity's mission and values.

Skills and Experience Required:

  • Experience with the voluntary and/or health and children's sector in Ireland.
  • Knowledge of regulatory and governance compliance.
  • Previous/current Board membership, preferably in the role of chair.
  • Financial acumen and ability to interrogate and interpret financial reporting.
  • Strong leadership skills and strategic thinking.
  • Excellent communications skills.
  • Effective stakeholder engagement, including with government and funders.
  • Visionary approach to fundraising.
  • Empathy and sensitivity.
  • A clinical background, in particular in paediatric health, would be desirable but not essential.
  • Commitment to the vision, mission and values of CIH Ireland

Board Meetings:

There are six Board meetings a year plus the AGM. The Board meetings usually take place on Tuesdays or Wednesdays at 6.00 pm for 1.5 hours.

Most meetings are online with two in-person meetings a year, one at the start of the year and one in the summer. The in-person meeting in January/February lasts for two hours and the summer meeting with staff lasts for four hours, including lunch. The AGM is hybrid.

Board Committees:

There are six Board committees. Some meet as needed or annually, and the Finance Committee meets five times a year. Committees meet online, usually lunchtime or evenings, and last for one hour. The chairperson may be required to attend some of these committee meetings.

Additional Time Commitment:

The chairperson has a monthly meeting with the CEO, either online or in-person. There are external meetings once or twice a year with stakeholders where it is preferable that the chairperson attend. Other events benefit from trustee and chair attendance such as the Annual Lecture, Fundraising Lunch, and Volunteer Appreciation event.
