Principal Software Engineer, Amazon Robotics
Job ID: 2847134 | Amazon Development Center Germany GmbH
Help deliver a new wave of robotic manipulation for contact-rich tasks in cluttered environments. With full stack teams, Amazon Robotics builds high-performance, real-time robotic systems that can perceive, learn, and act intelligently at Amazon scale. We invent and deploy AI systems for robotics in fulfillment. We build unique hardware to unlock more advanced capabilities. We integrate fleets of robots with the Amazon network to serve millions of customers across Europe and the rest of the globe. Our robots interact safely, efficiently, and fluently despite uncertainty in real-world fulfillment centers.
We are seeking a hands-on Principal Software Development Engineer to architect reliable and scalable stacks for both the edge and cloud portions of our solutions. We are a team of builders and you will be the technical engineering leader. You will be deep in code and algorithms. A successful candidate has excellent technical depth, great communication skills, and a drive to achieve results in a collaborative team environment.
You should enjoy the process of solving real-world problems that, quite frankly, haven’t been solved at scale anywhere before. Along the way, we guarantee you’ll get opportunities to be a fearless disruptor, prolific innovator, and a reputed problem solver—someone who truly enables AI and robotics to significantly improve our customers’ lives.
Key job responsibilities
1. Serve as the technical lead in the architecture, design, implementation, and deployment of the next generation robotic and automation systems.
2. Technically lead the delivery of both the edge and cloud stacks for scalable robotic systems with the support of dozens of engineers.
3. Assist directly and indirectly in the continual hiring and development of technical talent, including other Amazon Principal Engineers.
4. Facilitate technical collaboration across Amazon, increasing productivity and effectiveness by sharing your deep knowledge and experience.
5. Functionally decompose complex problems into simple, straightforward solutions and ensure the quality of architecture and design decisions deeper in the stack.
6. Contribute intellectual property through patents.
7. Represent the team and project at high-profile internal and external events.
A day in the life
We work next to a wonderful lab space where we can iterate and test our solutions on our robots. Because we are building for our own use cases, you can expect almost all of your time to be dedicated to technical work.
About the team
Robotics by nature requires an interdisciplinary team. Everyone we need to be successful is on the team. Work alongside talented software, hardware, and systems engineers. Collaborate with talented scientists in computer vision, machine learning, and motion control. Architect the future with innovative product and program managers. Visit Amazon sites and receive feedback from our internal operations customers.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
1. Bachelor’s degree in computer science (or related field) or equivalent industry experience.
2. Experience leading the delivery of complex and large-scale systems.
3. Experience leading development life cycle process and best practices.
4. Experience mentoring/training the engineering community on complex technical issues.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
1. Experience deploying code to physical hardware like robotics, vehicles, consumer devices, or industrial equipment.
2. Master’s degree or higher preferred.
3. Ability to decompose and solve ambiguous problems through proven design skills, sharp analytical abilities, and an ability to influence/utilize technical teams to execute on those ideas.
4. Demonstrated leadership abilities in an engineering environment, driving operational excellence and best practices across the team.
5. Deep hands-on technical expertise in cloud-based distributed software design and development.
6. Experience designing software architectures for scalability, reliability, and performance.
7. Ability to handle multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
8. Strong writing skills.
