Awards evening celebrates college’s sporting excellence

The Coláiste Mhuire, Mullingar junior rugby team.
On Tuesday May 22 Coláiste Mhuire Mullingar highlighted the sporting excellence achieved by the school during the 2023/2024 academic year with a memorable sports awards evening.
Held in the transformed school sports hall, the MCs for this special event were Dean McNicholas and Gráinne Byrne and they kept the evening flowing extremely well. Parents, family, friends, coaches, teachers, club representatives and medal recipients gathered to reflect on the truly magnificent year. With eight teams receiving medals over 150 students were involved ranging from first year to sixth year.
The victorious teams on what was a great year were as follows:
First Year West Leinster Division 2 Soccer Champions; First Year Basketball Midlands Champions; Second Year 'B' Leinster Hurling Champions; Senior Athletics Leinster Cross Country Champions; Junior Rugby League Champions.
The most prestigious feats were achieved by the Gaelic football teams in first, second and junior years who all won Leinster ‘A’ championships.
Spectators were treated to words of praise from each team coach and a special message was sent in from past Coláiste Mhuire students and present Westmeath Senior footballers David Lynch, John Heslin, Sam McCartan and Luke Loughlin. The school expressed sincere thanks to sponsors North Midlands Credit Union, who was represented by Derek Smith on the night, Mattie Murray. The support of all parents was acknowledged and the commitment of students who have accomplished so much this year, came in for special praise.
Overall, it was a great event and the key role played by Coláiste Mhuire not just academically, but in a sporting context, was very evident.
Leinster 'A' title a significant achievement
Mullingar's Coláiste Mhuire secured the Leinster second year 'A' football title with a wonderful victory over Carlow's Knockbeg College. It took extra-time to eventually separate two strong sides and what the final lacked in terms of quality, it more than atoned for in drama as Coláiste Mhuire took the title on a 4-8 to 3-9 scoreline.
Man of the match: Stephen McWade (Coláiste Mhuire): The talented centre forward was at the heart of all that was good and while he only managed two points from play, he was pivotal in a lot of other scores and the Knockbeg defence found it difficult to curb his influence.
Score of the match: MJ Long's goal after 10 minutes brought Coláiste Mhuire level, but the quality of the strike from 20 metres was to be admired on a day when missed chances abounded.
Fantastic hurling success
A tour de force by Lough Lene Gaels corner forward Conor Williams was the main talking point as a hugely impressive Coláiste Mhuire, Mullingar Second Year outfit claimed the Leinster ‘B’ hurling title by overwhelming Coláiste Eoin, Stillorgan in ideal conditions for hurling. The Mullingar side were 5-28 to 0-10 winners over Coláiste Eoin, Dublin.
