ESB is a purpose led company striving to create a brighter future for the customers and communities we serve, leading the transition to reliable, affordable, low-carbon energy. Today, we operate one of the most progressive electricity systems in the world, with activities spanning electricity generation, transmission, distribution and supply in Ireland, Northern Ireland and Great Britain, and an international energy consulting business.

With almost 8,000 employees we invested €1bn in infrastructure last year, contributed over €2bn to the economies we operate in and distributed over €2m across a range of community initiatives. This requires us to bring the best of our capabilities together to deliver innovative and value-driven solutions that enable our customers to live low-carbon lives. ESB strives to foster an effective and inclusive culture where people engage, challenge and feel connected to our purpose, colleagues, customers and community.

Position Description

Long-Term Business and Portfolio Planning in Generation and Trading (GT) is tasked with developing and implementing the GT Strategy. This involves long-term strategic thinking in areas such as technology and portfolio development, understanding and influencing the regulatory, policy, and political landscape, ensuring excellence in business leadership and transformation, providing expert advice and information internally, and representing ESB in Great Britain.

To carry out this mandate, the Long-Term Business and Portfolio Planning Team focuses on analysing the market and competitive environment, developing the GT strategy, identifying the future generation portfolio, and building capabilities in low- to zero-carbon generation technologies. The team also prepares GT positions on these technologies.

We currently have a senior vacancy in this team that will play a key role in shaping the GT strategy and future generation portfolio. The role requires the ability to assimilate and model the energy market, competitor behaviour, and emerging generation technologies to guide the future direction of our generation fleet. It involves interaction with both internal and external stakeholders as well as the ability to influence these stakeholders to ensure the successful delivery of the GT strategy.

Key Responsibilities

1. Develop future long-term market scenarios, assessing the impact for GT’s portfolio.
2. Update existing models and assess these against the existing strategy.
3. Challenge the status quo and build new scenarios and sensitivities that feed into the development or replacement of the existing strategy.
4. Assess emerging low- and zero- carbon generation technologies.
5. Develop a clear understanding of competitive drivers and their impact on the GT business and strategy. Collate, manage, and disseminate data relating to these drivers.
6. Conduct analysis and modelling to support goal and target setting for GT's pathway to net zero by 2040.
7. Track portfolio performance and progress against GT goals, including responsibility for internal reporting.
8. Lead projects to investigate and develop GT’s position on various topics (both technical and policy-related), including close collaboration with internal stakeholders to refine and revise those positions.
9. Advising and influencing key decision makers within the business.
10. Engage with other business units within ESB to ensure alignment between strategies and consistency of messaging both inside and outside the company.
11. Represent ESB within the industry to articulate GT’s positions and build support for them.
12. Engage with key external stakeholders and advocate for policies that are beneficial to ESB’s Net Zero by 2040 Strategy.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

- Minimum of 10 years relevant experience.
- In-depth understanding of the energy market.
- Good knowledge of the policies and regulatory frameworks in Ireland, the UK and the EU.
- Comprehensive understanding of the power generation business.
- Advanced modelling and analytical skills.
- Strong commercial and financial acumen.
- Excellent verbal and written communication.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to influence key decision-makers.
