As part of our expansion, we are currently looking for a suitably motivated - Senior Photonics Design Engineer - to join our group.

What you'll do

You will take an active role in the full Photonic Integrated Circuit (PIC) development lifecycle, contributing from concept to validation. This includes:

- Defining and tracking requirements and specifications in alignment with system-level or customer goals, in close collaboration with internal and external stakeholders across a broad range of disciplines, including design, fabrication, packaging, and test engineering.
- Design and optimise complex active and passive, large-scale PICs at the system, device and component level
- Propose and implement innovative design solutions across multiple technology domains including assembly integration and testing of photonics from component package to system level
- Design, source and simulate photonic components and photonic integrated circuits, including related electronics, and packaging
- Design detailed layout of photonic devices and simulate the circuits with common computer-aided design (CAD) tools including Lumerical, Nazca Design, and Klayout.
- Implement and improve in house design toolsets, quality and traceability procedures and DRC scripts to enable PIC our design workflow.
- Hands-on testing of PICs at die level and in system.
- Evaluate design solutions with simulations and compare with test data
- Plan and execute component and photonic system tests
- Work with foundries and manufacturers to plan and monitor research co-developments, prototyping and production timelines
- Present verbal and written findings to cross-functional teams and supervise both other photonics designers and intern students
- Contribute to our IP portfolio
- Collaborate with a team of photonic designers, nanofabrication engineers, test engineers, and physicists

Who you are

- M.Sc. or Ph.D. in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Optics, Photonics, or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience in the design and testing of photonic components (e.g., lasers, photodiodes, modulators).
- Proficient in Python and related scientific libraries such as NumPy, Pandas, and SciPy; familiarity with Linux environments is an asset.
- Skilled in numerical simulation methods commonly used in photonics, including FDTD, EME, FDE, FEM, and time-/frequency-domain circuit solvers.
- Familiar with photonic test methods and willing to perform hands-on device testing when required.
- Strong analytical and data presentation abilities, with attention to clarity and precision.
- Comfortable filling a variety of roles in a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment.
- Proven ability to meet strict deadlines and deliver high-quality results.
- Excellent communication skills in English, with the ability to collaborate effectively across teams.
- High attention to detail and a strong commitment to accurate engineering.
