The Behavioural Research Unit at the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) wishes to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Fellow. The Institute

The ESRI, founded in 1960, is located in Dublin’s South Docklands area. Our mission is to produce high-quality research relevant to Ireland’s economic and social development, contributing to knowledge and informing policymaking and public debate. We have over 100 staff, including economists, sociologists, and other social scientists, as well as support and technical staff.

The Institute’s research outputs and their policy implications have been published extensively over the last six decades. All research projects undertaken by the ESRI have a significant public good element, with results published without restriction. The Institute offers excellent facilities and fosters a supportive, team-based research environment.

The Behavioural Research Unit (BRU)

The BRU is a team of behavioural economists and psychologists conducting behavioural research for various government departments and agencies. The BRU specializes in designing and conducting laboratory, online, and field experiments to diagnose policy problems and test potential solutions, focusing on behaviours related to financial, environmental, and health outcomes. Role Description

The role involves designing, programming, and conducting original experiments related to environmental, health, and financial decision-making. The position requires strong quantitative and experimental research skills. The successful candidate will work collaboratively as part of the team.

Skills, Qualifications, and Experience

- A Ph.D. in a relevant discipline (completed or nearing completion)
- A strong research record
- Broad knowledge of relevant literature in applied behavioural science
- Proficiency with statistical software and techniques
- Excellent writing, presentation, and communication skills
- Scientific curiosity and enthusiasm

Location

ESRI, Whitaker Square, Sir John Rogerson’s Quay, Dublin 2. Staff may work remotely from Ireland on a blended basis, with a minimum of one day per week in the office. This arrangement is currently on a pilot basis, with full details provided at interview.

Terms & Application Procedure

The standard workweek is 35 hours (09:30-17:30, Monday–Friday), with flexible hours supported. The appointment is on a three-year fixed-term contract. The starting salary is €49,818, aligned with the first point of the ESRI Administrative Officer (Higher) salary scale. The application deadline is 27 August at 5 pm. The selection process includes a preliminary interview, followed by a final interview, presentation, and written assessment for shortlisted candidates. Interviews will be conducted via videoconference (MS Teams or Zoom).
