Overview of role:
The post of CNMII has a pivotal role in service planning, co-ordinating, and managing activity and resources within the clinical area. The CNMII Day Ward will co-ordinate and lead in the implementation and provision of a quality care.
Responsibilities Clinical: Manage patient care to ensure the highest professional standards using an evidence-based, care planning approach.
Provide a high level of professional and clinical leadership.
Be responsible for the co-ordination, assessment, planning, delivery and review of service user care by all staff in designated area.
Provide safe, comprehensive nursing care to service users within the guidelines laid out by NMBI (Nursing & Midwifery Board of Ireland).
Participate in teams/meetings/committees as appropriate, communicating and working in co-operation with other team members.
Facilitate co-ordination, co-operation and liaison across healthcare teams.
Collaborate with service users, family, carers, and other staff in treatment/care.
Assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care by personal involvement and supervising the activities of other qualified nurses.
Ensure care delivered by the team is based on evidence-based standards and hospital policy.
Regularly evaluate and monitor patient care using the hospital's quality systems to ensure delivery of care.
Develop and promote good relationships with patients, families and carers, and make the ward environmentally welcoming and homely.
Work as an effective member of the multidisciplinary team to promote good teamwork and excellent patient care.
Evaluate and develop the philosophy, objectives and goals of the department.
Ensure staff familiarity with equipment, and maintain such equipment in good working condition.
Ensure strict confidentiality of patient information.
Managerial Responsibilities: Provide supervision, coordination and deployment of nursing and support staff to ensure optimum delivery of care in the designated area, allocating work fairly and competently.
Manage communication at ward and departmental level and facilitate team building.
Provide staff leadership and motivation conducive to good working relations and performance.
Manage all resources efficiently and effectively.
Lead on practice development within the clinical area.
Lead and implement change.
Promote, facilitate and participate in the development of nursing policies and procedures; monitor and lead proactive improvement.
Contribute to the development and implementation of policies and procedures at area and hospital level.
Participate in the Nursing Management structure by supporting the Assistant Director of Nursing and deputising when required.
Maintain all necessary clinical and administrative records and reporting arrangements.
Quality & Safety - Safe Culture: Active participation in quality and safety initiatives; plan, monitor, analyse and improve quality programs with line manager.
Participate in development of performance indicators with department manager and business objectives.
Initiate, participate in and evaluate audits according to CHKS/JCI/JAG/HIQA, hospital policy and Lean requirements under guidance of senior nursing leadership and quality team.
On-call Rota: Participate in the on-call manager's rota.
Staff Development and Education: Ensure care is based on individual assessment of care needs and promote this within the ward team; ensure staff development and induction programmes are in place; ensure each staff member has a personal development plan; promote reflective practice.
Qualifications & Experience:
Be registered in the General Division of the live Register of Nurses kept by NMBI.
Have completed a Management Course or commit to undertake same.
Be a minimum of 5 years qualified with previous experience in an acute Surgical/Medical environment.
Previous management experience is essential.
Experience in change management.
Evidence of continuing professional development.
Awareness of HR policies and procedures.
Working knowledge of Microsoft packages is essential.
Active role in continuous improvement using lean tools and methodology.
Possess excellent communication skills and effective communication with medical staff, other MDT members, patients and relatives.
Implement change in line with new developments in nursing.
Work as an effective member of the multidisciplinary team promoting good teamwork and excellent patient care.
Well-developed leadership, interpersonal and organisational skills.
