Role purpose

UPMC Aut Even Hospital is recruiting a Clinical Nurse Manager II for the In-Patient Surgical Ward. The CNM II has a pivotal role in service planning, coordinating and managing activity and resources within the clinical area. The CNM II will coordinate and lead in the implementation and provision of quality care.

Responsibilities

- Professional / Clinical: Manage patient care to ensure the highest professional standards using an evidence-based, care planning approach.
- Provide a high level of professional and clinical leadership.
- Be responsible for the coordination, assessment, planning, delivery and review of service user care by all staff in the designated area.
- Provide safe, comprehensive nursing care to service users within the guidelines laid out by NMBI (Nursing & Midwifery Board of Ireland).
- Participate in teams/meetings/committees as appropriate, communicating and working in cooperation with other team members.
- Facilitate coordination, cooperation and liaison across healthcare teams.
- Collaborate with service users, family, carers and other staff in treatment/care.
- Assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care personally and by supervising other qualified nurses.
- Ensure that care delivered by the team is based on standards formed from evidence-based practice and hospital policy.
- Regularly evaluate and monitor patient care using the hospital's quality systems to ensure care is delivered.
- Develop and promote good relationships with patients, families and carers and make the ward environment welcoming and homely.
- Work as an effective member of the multidisciplinary team to promote good teamwork and excellent patient care.
- Evaluate and further develop the department's philosophy, objectives and goals.
- Ensure all staff are familiar with the use and care of all equipment and that equipment is maintained in good working condition.
- Ensure strict confidentiality of patient information.

Managerial Responsibilities

- Provide supervision, coordination and deployment of nursing and support staff to ensure optimum delivery of care in the designated area, allocating work fairly and competently.
- Manage communication at ward and departmental levels and facilitate team building.
- Provide staff leadership and motivation conducive to good working relations and performance.
- Manage all resources efficiently and effectively.
- Lead on practice development within the clinical area.
- Lead and implement change.
- Promote, facilitate and participate in the development of nursing policies and procedures; monitor and lead proactive improvement.
- Contribute to the formulation, development and implementation of policies and procedures at area and hospital level.
- Actively participate in the Nursing Management structure.
- Maintain clinical and administrative records and reporting arrangements.

On-call

- The post holder is expected to participate in the on-call manager’s rota.

Staff Development and Education

- Ensure care delivered to patients is the result of individual assessment of care needs and promote this within the ward team.
- Ensure staff development and induction programme for trained and untrained staff is in place for the clinical area.
- Ensure each staff member has a personal development plan addressing current post requirements and opportunities for development.
- Facilitate an environment conducive to reflective practice.

Clinical and Professional Leadership

- Evidence-Based Practice: promote evidence-based nursing practice and participate in developing standards of care using hospital-wide approaches.
- Promote and improve quality and standards of care through participation in quality and patient safety programmes.

Clinical Governance

- Participate in innovation and change in patient care delivery and contribute to service planning based on best practice and new research findings.
- Participate in setting professional standards and measure/audit the effectiveness of care to provide quality care.
- Lead and maintain clinical governance principles including quality, risk and health & safety within the work area; be responsible for governance, risk management and safety issues.
- Record and report incidents, near misses and complaints according to hospital policy.
- Develop policies, procedures and guidelines to support compliance with research best practice.

Accreditation and Quality & Safety – Safe Culture

- Familiarise with policies, procedures and guidelines related to clinical care and area; assist in policy review under direction of chapter lead/department manager.
- Quality and safety are integral to daily work. Participate in planning, monitoring, analysis and improvement of quality programs.
- Develop performance indicators with the department manager and business objectives; participate in audits according to JCI, hospital policy and Lean requirements.

Personnel

- Adhere to the uniform policy and related requirements.

General

- Occasional work in other areas of the hospital as required by patient needs and line management; provide documentary evidence of training and experience when requested; respect organisational values of the hospital.

Qualifications & Experience

- Registered in the General Division of the live NMBI Register.
- Completed a Management Course or commit to undertake one.
- Minimum of 5 years qualified, with previous experience in a medical environment.
- Previous management experience is essential.
- Experience in change management.
- Evidence of continuing professional development.
- Awareness of HR policies and procedures.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft packages.
- Active involvement in continuous improvement using lean tools and methodology.
- Excellent communication skills; effective communication with medical staff, the multidisciplinary team, patients and relatives.
- Ability to implement change in response to new developments in nursing.
- Work as an effective team member and promote excellent patient care; well-developed leadership, interpersonal and organizational skills.
