Post-Doctoral Researcher The School of English and Digital Humanities

36 Months, Specific Purpose Full-Time Post Position Summary Applications are invited for a Post-Doctoral Researcher with an expertise in Old Norse-Viking Studies and/or Politics, to lead the Politics & Identity strand of the NorseMap Project based in the School of English and Digital Humanities. NorseMap is a 5-year project funded by the European Research Council, using citizen science methodologies to gather data on the Viking legacy from across Europe and mapping the evolution of responses to the Viking past over time. The ideal candidate will either have a PhD in Old Norse Viking Studies and have engaged in their research with the politicisation of the Viking past, or they will have a PhD in Politics or an adjacent discipline and have engaged with (mis)uses of the past by contemporary political movements, online extremism and the spread of disinformation. In leading the Politics & Identity strand of the project, the candidate will be expected to gather data on political uses of the Vikings both in the present day (particularly in online spaces) and in particular historical contexts, to integrate this data with that of the other project strands to identify networks of influence and the cross fertilisation of ideas from commercial and cultural spaces into the political domain, to identify particular case studies that illustrate the evolution of ideas about the Vikings and their use in politics and identity formation to the present, and to produce a monograph based on this research as part of a series on the Viking legacy. A particular focus will be comparing the use of the Vikings in ethnonationalist discourse in Scandinavia with other European contexts. The candidate should have experience of working with the public and be comfortable conducting ethnographic research and online surveys. We are particularly interested in including Eastern Europe in our coverage, and candidates with expertise in the reception of the Vikings in Poland, Ukraine or the Baltic States, or linguistic expertise relating to these areas, are particularly encouraged to apply. This is an exciting opportunity to join a team of researchers in mapping the legacy of a cultural phenomenon and to play a leading role in the successful implementation of an ERC-funded project. Achievement of the expected progression within Post Doc and Senior Post Doc is transferable between the Irish HEI's. This can be reflected in the starting pay of a PD researcher. Similarly, as the PD scheme is an intergenerational training scheme completion of PD1 or PD 2 levels in one HEI will normally render that researcher ineligible for appointment at a similar level in another Irish HEI Researcher Career Development Framework | Irish Universities Association Project Title: NorseMap: Mapping the Reception and Legacy of the Vikings in Europe Post Duration: 36 Months, Full-Time Post Salary: €46,306 - €52,863 (IUA PD1 Salary Scale) For an information package including further details of the post see Informal enquiries can be made in confidence to Tom Birkett, Professor of Old English, School of English and Digital Humanities, Tel: + ; Email: Applications must be submitted online via the University College Cork vacancy portal Queries relating to the online application process should be referred to quoting the job-title and project name.
