Job Title: Staff Nurse – Urology Day Unit
Department: Urology Day Unit
Reports to: Urology Manager
Overall Purpose of the Job
To deliver exceptional patient care in an environment where quality, respect, compassion, and excellence are at the heart of all services provided at the Urology Centre.
The Urology Nurse is responsible for providing competent, compassionate, and efficient care to all patients attending the Urology Unit. This role includes clinical, administrative, and service delivery responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities and Deliverables

Provide day-to-day nursing care for patients attending the Urology Department.

Participate in patient consultations, follow-up phone calls, scheduling appointments, and managing related administrative tasks to ensure efficient service delivery.

Assist in all procedures performed within the Urology Department.
-
Foster strong collaborative relationships between nursing staff and consultants, maintaining open and respectful communication.
-
Liaise with hospital staff and wards regarding inpatient referrals and other coordination needs.
-
Contribute to Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation activities.
-
Participate in multidisciplinary and intra-departmental meetings, including cancer multidisciplinary team meetings.
Urology Department Specific Responsibilities
-
Assist consultants during procedures and contribute to maintaining and enhancing care standards.
-
Provide patient education and support for both day care and inpatients, as well as through telephone consultations, ensuring all interactions are appropriately documented.

Deliver clinical management and independent care for patients undergoing flow rate assessments, reporting results to consultants.
-
Provide clinical care for bladder instillation treatments upon completion of required training and competency assessments.
-
Deliver clinical care and education for patients requiring urethral or suprapubic catheter changes.
-
Educate and support patients undergoing self-catheterisation or trial without catheter.
-
Provide care and education for patients undergoing urodynamic testing.
-
Participate in data collection, statistical reporting, and clinical outcomes tracking.
-
Contribute to research projects aimed at advancing clinical practice within the department.

Remain open to training in new procedures and contributing to the development of new service programmes.
-
Maintain flexibility and adaptability in response to changing departmental needs.
Clinical Responsibilities
The post holder must be familiar with and adhere to The Professional Scope of Practice Framework (NMBI, 2015).
Responsibilities include:

Assessing, planning, implementing, evaluating, and accurately documenting patient care.

Delivering care to both day patients and inpatients in accordance with best practice standards.

Ensuring efficient patient flow by prioritising appointments based on clinical urgency.
The post holder will also engage in patient safety and quality improvement processes, including:

Identifying and implementing quality initiatives.

Evaluating current practices against best practice standards.
-
Supporting health promotion initiatives.
-
Participating in the hospital’s JCI accreditation cycle.

Maintain effective working relationships with consultants, hospital staff, patients, families, and external agencies.

Communicate effectively with the Urology Department Manager, nursing colleagues, and other relevant personnel throughout each shift.

Participate in hospital-wide and interdepartmental quality improvement activities.

Person Specification
Qualifications
-
Registered General Nurse (RGN) with a valid NMBI licence in good standing.
Experience
-
Minimum of two years’ clinical experience.
-
Experience in Urology nursing is desirable.
-
Must be able to speak, read, and write fluent, grammatically correct English.
